I have a 1997 Tacoma Ext Cab 4WD. It still has the original factory am/fm cassette in it with a storage pocket underneath the radio. The number on the radio is A56405. I would like to either add a toyota add-on cd player in place of the storage pocket. Ive seen just the add-on cd player for sale but I don’t know if its compatible with this radio. Or replace the current radio and storage pocket with a toyota am/fm/cd/cassette unit. Ive also seen these for sale but cant find any information on which ones are compatible with my truck. I called the local dealer and they wouldn’t even take the time to look it up in the computer. I know that units out of other model Toyotas will work but I can't find out which ones.

Any help would be appreciated.

All tacomas use the same basic wiring harness for the radio. I'm not sure about the models that came with amplified systems, they might have had an additional harness. You should be able to install pretty much any toyota stereo from 1987 up, as long as it doesn't have an external amplifier (little silver box lookin' thing).

You really don’t want a stock Toy CD player because they are made cheap but cost around 375.00. Mine sounds like a Ferbie when it's changing disc’s. I need to figure out how to get it out and replace it with my Pioneer. 2002 Prerunner.

For all Toyota models 92 and up there is a harness which they call "the amplified integrated harness" which changes the current regular speaker wires in the back of the head units to include a now current front and rear pair of RCA plugs and the other wires which you might need power, pwr attenna, ground, mem, battery....etc.

I seen it for I think it was 19 bucks at FRYS. I forget the manufacturer. There are also adapter harness, etc.

I wanted to include a sub for my Xtra Cab but they are all on a common ground which only had no RCA outputs from the OEM stereo. I have the CD/Tape/Radio head unit. Try to figure out how to attach that to an amp. By the way. If you try to attach another set of speakers to either side the OHMS will change or it can sound out of phase...lol Depending on how you do that. Right now I got the OEM speakers in front, replaced the rear panels with 225watt pioneer speakers and added a SUB + 2 mid/bass speakers.

It may sound unorthodox but I added a 600watt amp. I'm happy now

I have an 03, had it for a day and put in a Panasonic Sirius 900series deck, an alpine amp and 4 infinity Kappa component speakers to replace all factory speakers and tweeters. The sound is absoultly amazing. I would definitly recommend it.
