Alright, the Manuals were 6 speed but how many were the automatics? 4? or 6?

A4 and M6

It's a 4 speed... but sometimes when you drive it, it feels like it's got like 6 gears that it slips in and out of. Sometimes slips in between 1st and 2nd... 2nd and 3rd... 3rd and overdrive... It's annoying.

I'm getting an SS next year with a 6 speed. Autos are just boring.

Auto's are fast. put a stall a transgo and nittos' and expect a drop of .75 second. even though 7 out of 10 races are won by auto'' boring.. wining isn't boring
consistancy.. yucan't outshiftthe4l60 e.. right now the best aut Amrica make. yeah try chrping 3rdstock in any other

I chirp third all the time in my M6, and three pedals do make the sports car, it's more fun that way :)

Yeah, manuals ARE a lot more fun to drive, but if your drag racing, an auto is a lot more consistent

Don't know, I think they were still running 700R4's in 96 with the impala, so I would imagine the same for the camaro. Correct me if I'm wrong.

1993 saw the introduction of the 4L60, notice the lack of the "e". It was basically a 700R4. The 4L60E was put into the 94+ LT1's, and is basically a 700R4 that is electronically controlled...

BTW, for those of you that manually shift your 4L60E's, I highly recommend that you don't. You can burn them up fast. They are not meant to be shifted manually. Just throw it into D when you are going to race, and leave it there. If you don't think it shifts at the right spot, get your PCM reprogrammed, or buy a hypertech and adjust the shift points yourself. You should just be able to pin that bitch and have it run the best times possible, and not shift it yourself...

I originally wasn't able to use "1" - because of some bullshit noise pollution law or other mine was locked out. I had to pop up the shifter console and cut away this little piece of plastic that was blocking it. :grinno:

But I can tell you my tranny has gotten dumber over the last two summers from screwing around with the gears. Its brutal cause my gears are really tall and a lot of times it won't downshift into first even at like 25 Mph - so I'm stuck in second gear from 25/30 Mph to 85 Mph. BRUTAL!!!!!! And it never used to be like that - I could be going 40 Mph and she'd drop into first at like 5000 PRM and run all the way up to 6000. All by herself.

I'm eyeing a 600+ HP dyno'd 700R4 as a replacement - hopefully in mid summer.

There ya go, DVS is a prime example of what can happen from manually shifting a 4L60E. It's just not a good idea, and might result in a situation like his...

hehe , manually shifting a 700r4 is a fun experience however :). Put a ratchet shifter on the 84and its much better when you do it yourself. From what I've seen the older 700r4's shift way to early on the HO motors.

absolutely!! manuals are much more fun, if its a nice gearbox, but ill get one when i have a spare space in my garage i dont yet have, and weekends to go play. right now, i commute, and the car is my all vehicle. so for traffic and mundain stuff, the manual would be a pain. but also, i like being fast. and no manual, unless your shumacher with a paddle shifter. is faster than a ratchet shifted auto with a shift kit and performance kit. kinda the reason all prostock and high end drag cars use them. well, CO2 shifted anyway. only exception i can think of is top fuel diggers and funny cars. they just have clutchpacks.
