1984 Jeep CJ 7 automatic Transmissions ?

I have a 1984 CJ 7 Jeep Renegade . I've had it for 19 years . there was only one other owner before me .
A few years ago I took my jeep to a jeep repair place here in Austin . One of the things I got them to do was rebuild MY automatic transmission . the car just ran different when I got it back and used twice as much gas as before . it always felt like it wasn't shifting into the last gear on the highway like it used to . I've had other problems with since I got it back and took it to a transmission repair place , they reapired my leak , told me I had a 3 speed transmission and all the gears were shifting correctly .
Many years ago , my back up lights stopped working and the started wouldn't work . I tracked the problem down to a plug that goes into the bottom of the automatic transmission . which was used for the back up lights and the nutral safty switch . The male pins coming out of the transmission were flat , to match the female ends on the plug . I resently had the same problem , so I looked at the plug that , plugged into the bottom of the transmission . The male pins are now round , coming out of the transmission . These guys at the Jeep repair place , who were supposed to rebuild my transmission had put a different transmission back in my jeep .
Does any one know , was Chrysler also putting in a 4 speed automatic transmission in jeep Renegades that year ?
