I am in posession of a 1994 Grand Am with the Quad-4 engine. It is entirely stock, and I was wondering what all can be done to increase the horsepower. I have no experience with preformance parts, so an explination would be helpful. I however do not consider NOS because of the negative effects on the engine. I am thinking like the best air filter for my GA, a "chip" perhaps and whatever else you guys think.

Try a Super Chip module , you can change all kinds of settings like shift points , Air fuel mixtures and they also add some Horse power. I forgot to mention , they also get rid of the rev limiters and Top speed limiter. Headers and exhaust work well for some gains as well as port polishing , they dont make the most huge difference but you will notice a positive change in performance. If you want a big difference right away , get a turbo or a supercharger , they make huge difference. If you have a manual transmission , a sporty clutch and ultra light flywheel will make more difference than the intake and exhaust work. If you have an automatic , a sporty torque converter will help you punch off the line alot better too , although the fuel economy will be alot worse and the launch rpms will be extremely high. Its kinda the same with a manual tranny but you have more controll of your rpms. I hope this helps.

Super Chips , average $300 dollars for a module. Works well with cold air intake (K&N , Green Filter or air raid). Look for it at SUPERCHIPS.com

super chips are garbage. if you want to do anything i would get a reflash. I would do an HO manifold swap. run cams from an HO or W41. www.gmperformancetuning.com or http://www.quad4forums.com/ are great sources for grand ams and the quad 4 motor

Yes I agree with the HO manifold , but the car has an internal cam , the cost of these items urweak mentioned will cost alot of cash. Money = more performance but if you just wanna play around a little theres lots of stuff you can do with a budget.

Porting and polishing the head and intake is going to be rather costly. But if you were to have then done by someone who knows what they are doing you can get Major H/P gains an engine has to breath to make power and anything that helps it breath better, and faster will make more power. Porting & polishing, and while the head and intake is off you could to the Bigger Cam Swap, Say from the 2.3L H.O eng. Then Go for a bigger Throttle body. 60 mm is probably plenty big, you don't want to go to big then you will have to change injectors and do other Mods.

you could get the HO throttle body, i think its 56mm. probably get one from a yard for 100 tops

Will intake and exhaust manifolds from a 91 H.O. work on my 92 SOHC motor?

I don't think they will The HO is a DOHC engine.
