94 4Runner shifting problems

My 4Runner has about 142,000 miles on it and has recently started acting up. When I first start driving it after it has sat for a while, it does not want to shift gears. It will drive like that until it has warmed up and then it runs fine. Is this something I can fix at home and what should I look into first? Thanks!!

If its a manual, you might want to check your bushings. If its a auto, check the fluid

It's an auto and my dad is getting the fluid flushed next week. We took a look at the fluid and it is brown. So hopefully that will solve any problems. Thanks for the tip!

No prob. THe fluid shouldn't be brown. It she be more translucent, so hopefully that works. Dirty fluid never helped anyone ;)

Get the thermistat checked, I had the same problem on my runner. It has something to do with the way the transmission cooler works. The therm is in an awful place, but you can do it yourself.

Have you tried to adjust the transmission cable attached to the throttle quad?
