I wanna hear some opinions, who thinks the 750iL is the finest luxury car out there?? not counting bentley and rolls-royce
but compare it to it's competitors, like the Mercedes S600

The E32 750i is a total cruiser with gobs of power which will suprise most of the Stang 5.0's out there. Interior is quiet and you can travel subsonic with almost no effort. But(and you knew there was one coming)the Merc S600 you have got to give props to for most of the same reasons. I rode in one with a 1st gear start mod in the Auto transmission(they apparently start off in 2nd stock) and that thing pulls STRONG. The difference is that the Merc-Benz has got less emotion in my opinion than ANY 7 series. Of course I seem to have that emotional bond with all BMW's. The newer bodied 750i is of course to die for, and I woudl snag one if I had the money.

The S class, IMO, is far superior in looks. Performance and luxury should be damn similar in both, so I'd base my final choice on looks and reliability....I go MBZ

Yeah, youre right the card board box lookin body with the Mr.Potato Head stick-on headlights on the S-Class looks a whole lot better than the Sexy lines and athletic haunch of the new 7-series. I guess that's why James Bond's car was a 7, he likes only the Dorky looking cars, the S-Class just had to much sex appeal for him.....NOT. But seriously, enough Benz Bashing, I do like the S-Class just I feel it does not belong in the same light as the 7. It's a little more utilitarian and bland than the BMW. If I wanted big luxury and power now, I would probably go with the MBZ S600 (362 HP & 391 TQ). I'm not a big fan of MBZ so I would probably wait for the BMW 760. That looks pretty sweet and is gonna be packin' a V12 supposedly.

the 750iL has a V12

so why wouldn't the 760 have a V12?

BMW has been on a V8 kick for the past couple of years and supposedly stopped production of the 750i, but the legend will live on as I have heard that there WILL be another 12cyl. in the future for BMW. Completely off the subject has anyone checked out the three films from www.bmwfilms.com.....they are awesome!!!! attached is some more eyecandy from the wizards at BMW

BMW aren't stopping production of the 7
they have had the same design for 7 years now, so next year there is going to be a totally new 7 series

I realize that they are not stopping production of the 7 series, I was mearly mentioning that the production of the 750i stopped meaning that they are only producing the 740i/il right now. The *50i indicates that the 5.0 liter v12 is no longer available. Hope this helps.

What a #$%& are you saying there.... Any bimmer is better that any Mercedes !!! :biggrin2: OK, that was a joke, but I'd say that the most important thing that BMW has and MB has not is - the Right Reputation :D !

But the point is - BMW Rulez and others don't .

Check this out... Isn't it sweet? :evillaugh

There's a clear difference in the way that the Benz and the Bimmer approach their daily tasks. Both coddle you in typical Teutonic luxury style, but the Bimmer is more willing to handle the twisties. Style-wise, I do like the Benz, but I still think the Bimmer's lines are classic... but I am not a big fan of the upcoming 7-series....

Too bad we can't get the Alpina B12 6.0 in the US. :(

I dont much like the new S class. The interior is sort of frumpy in my opinion. Plys Benz dealers are all crooks. The service charges are ridiculous. I love the E55 though and think its gorgeous.

For all who dont know, Mercedes has lately been putting some crap components in cars so that they will go out after a few years and have to be replaced out of warranty. One such item is the sunroof motor, which is a 925 dollar fix. I know many people who have done this fix. Another problem area is the stereo system. That high quality bose garbage blows out if you turn it up around 90 Decibels. Finally, the smartkey costs 365 dollars to replace if you lose it. Bottom line- Mercedes is not worth the money or the respect it is given. It is the car people THINK that they would want if they could afford it. I would like to see some more quality and and more value in their products. For all who disagree, just for s and g to to the local dealer and look at the sticker prices. The options are absurd and expensive. The CL 600 for example has a list of options on a car thats already 120K dollars! Better yet, they like to charge you several thousand dollars if you want any color other than grey for your interior leather on some models, or if you want a certain color combo. The only car brand more ridiculous on this type of thing is Porsche, and if youve ordered a Porsche in the last five years you know what I mean.

The Benz North America group is really agitating me. They are ripoff cars. Now, if i were given 125,000 dollars for a luxury sedan I would buy a one year old Bentley Red Label Arnage with 8500 miles on it. Its fast as hell and very stylish.

They are good cars, just like you said they're not always totally honest. They do charge some stupid prices, but that's what you pay for a status symbol. That's the only reason they over charge

Are we comparing the 750iL with the new S or the old W140 shape ? Well my dad drives the S600 W140 shape with the real 6.0 V12 400HP not the detuned version currently used and I have the 7 modified and it terms of performance and engine straight line can't beat the merc but the handling the 7 wins. In terms of luxury still can't go pass the s600 but the 7 wins in terms of sporty looks and sexiness.

I love my 1990 E32 when it works! I have had a lot of problems lately with little things.. expensive little things.

I still say it is the best car out there though. My 750iL is definetly a fine automobile.

It really depends on what you want to do with a machine. I used to repair MB and they had the worst seats I ever sat in (maybe the never models are better) RR was a big disapointment, great for sitting in the shade at the hunt sipping sherry but a b---h to drive. I'll take my Porsche 928S anyday for a spirited drive, it begs to be driven hard into turns but my 750iL is great on a long trip. PS Always carry spares and a reasonable metric toolkit. They are all fun and have personalities.

I'm hesitant to plunge into the BMW vs. M-B argument, since I like both. For the record, I currently drive a (15-year old) BMW. I love exterior styling of the W220 S-Class. Interior-wise, I'm not so fond of it. I like the more angular interior of the W140 and W124/W210 E-Class better. I loved the E38 7-Series, and definitely don't like the shape of the E65 as much as either the older BMW or new M-B. If I had large financial resources (I don't), I think I'd choose a new S600 Sport over both the E38 750iL and E65 760Li. I've never driven any of these cars, so my opinion is based entirely on looks, magazine tests, and owners' comments.

There's clearly something to be said for a distinctive personality and sporting nature, and here I think the BMW (E38 at least) excels.

Nice pictures of the Alpina E38 by the way!

Well the bmw 750i lent its engine to rolls royce at one point , but its not just that i own a bmw 750i 5.49 v12 mtec 186mph and shifts like a upto date porche and does on occation when people like to test it , i live in germany home of the petrol head and love to put it to the test every now and then. for me its the lift when you hit the kick down in sport mode then to piss em off even more slam it into manual seeeeeeee-yeh 11 year old and kicks arse like it made today

the E38 750IL was and still is the best luxury car for me....i had a 1995 740IL, and even though it broke once, (it had over 200k on it) i loved that car. it looks so good, and the handling was really nice...plus the V8 power was amazing, i smoked 330ci, and kept up with a evo(50mph-130mph), hows that.....its a really nice car, and i know that the 750IL has more options and is even faster...plus the the 7-series car is really cofortable because it has the "bucket seats". my friend has a Jaguar XJ8 and we went travled for 110 miles and my butt was sore, those seats suck, and mercedes arent that good as a 7 series either (rode in a E430) right now im thinking about getting another 7-Series even though it does eat gas.....

i have a friend who has a 1988 750il and he wants to know where is the fuel pump relay located. the car will crank and run when you spray ether to it and according to him, the fuel pump works when you hook it to the battery possibly indicating the pump relay is not working
