Alright everyone ..i just got a 1990 honda crx dx..its a fun little car to drive but needs work ..anyways its gonna be my commuter car for when i start school so i cant afford an engine swap right now .My question is what can i do to get some noticeable hp gains..USING OEM parts ..so far i know about changing to the SI/EX injection so thats on my to do list .
what about modifying the stock airbox ? gains? disadvantages? heat wrap on the exhaust manifold maybe? is there any cam shafts from a different d-series that will go in? i know with b series thats easier ..umm..yah thats bout it..all suggestions and tips are helpful..
i also thought about the MINI-ME swap so i could get vtec but does it work with the dx 1.5 motor?..if so how hard is this to do ..?it seems quite difficult fromwhat ive read .
ok thats it..again lol..thanks!

Easy HP gains..........hmmmmmmmmmm.......I dont believe in that. How bout upgrades. Cheap and do it urself performance upgrades would be to rip out everything that has weight. Simple easy HP gains are I/H/E.

I know all about I/H/E but as of right now i dont have enough cash to buy a cat-back exhaust and header ..intake i could get the money ..im also trying to go for a "stock" look .

Step 1: Sell the car.

Get a good quality stereo system. If you're commuting, you'll appreciate it when sitting in traffic. Also, when you get a new car, you can easily take all of the equipment with you. I wouldn't recommend speed parts unless you're really a die hard Honda fan. There are many cars that serve better as a performance platform upon which to build.

since no-one answered your questions, id say do the MPFI swap from the Si, then swap over a head from any 92+ Si/EX civic to get a very nice HP gain, a new head will only run a few 100 dollars and is a bolt and unbolt opperation.

I completely disagree. Granted, a CRX is pretty old, but it's also one of the lightest platforms you can buy. As a daily commuter, it may not be very practical (depending on who you ask), but as a performance platform, a curb weight of 1967 lbs (for the '91 HF model) combined with Honda reliability is hard to beat.

i agree with Ace$nyper, i have a 2g civic and still have some fun with it as a commuter. this forum is testament to the fact that a 14 year old honda is still a great machine :2cents:

if you live around a junkyard, i suggest a B18B conversion. with you light platform, and minor mods, you can easily defeat gsr's

right there. Calling a 1990 CRX dx a 14 year old money pit. for less then 5 grand you can make this car pull 14s in quater new paint wheels and handle very well. The CRX and its brother the civic hatchback are AFs most popular Forums check the #s your self. OK so i don't put all my writing skills into my typing so what this is fairly informal. Just because a car has some age doesn't mean its not a great car. Just say EF pwns me and your forgiven i'm not too much of an ass really just hate it when people who dont know about stuff post somthing rude like that.

I've had old cars in the past and got tired of putting money into them. To me a 14 year old car is still a 14 year old car, you fix one thing something else goes wrong! Why put hundreds or even thousands of dollars into a bad investment. While you're dumping all this $$$ into a 14s '90 Civic, guess what it's still a freakin' econobox Civic!! I don't care what bling bling rims and tires or CAI or coffee can exhaust you put on it.

yea real spoons fucking bling bling rims silly me. LOL.All i'm saying is this is a great car cause you don't need to dump alot in to it like most other 14yr old cars! So you had probs with older cars not many of us haven't hell i've had more probs with newer things ( i owned a 2k3 motorcylce for 4months till i gave up and bought a flawless '82) So its up to him he wants to spend his money on a wise investment as far as cheap tuner cars go.

Well as much as ide lovee to do a swap right now..its out of the question ..im thinkin of just staying stock until im done with school and then while im down in fla if i decide to live there buy a JDM B16A cuz itll be cheap and do it over or even a JDM B18C

Hey Jedi not to totally agree with GP2k but it is a 14 year old car.. I would keep it stock for a daily commuter. A few hundred bucks could either buy you a mountain of Ramen noodles, or give you like 20hp and make your car a bit faster. CRX's are outstanding platforms to make racecars from whether straight line or apex monsters, but it does cost a lot of money. I would save for a bigger engine down the line. That's just my realistic 2¢, but if you're still stuck on squeezing some juice out of your 1.5 sohc, then go ahead and get an Si head for her (don't forget the ECU).

A crx doesnt reach its highest potential unless you do an engine swap, but anyway thats my opinion.
The easiest and cheapest way to get horsepower is to polish and port your head. There are dozens of instructional sites and the tools cost minimal for a DIY-er. I dont understand why most people dont do it!!

Word of warning: unless you REALLY know what you're doing, I wouldn't attempt a port-n-polish. A screwed up engine isn't worth the $400 that you'd save by trying to do it yourself. From what I hear, it's really easy to screw up (something about dust getting inside the cylinder). Someone else could give you a clearer explanation.

Getting dust inside the cylinder? Just use a trashbag to cover the exposed block.
Most guides instruct you to find a practice head at a junkyard, one that is very similar, and do it on that. Most DIY porting is barely more than polishing. Most factory heads have mass producting induced restrictions that can be cleared up simply by deburring it. Race ports should be done by the pros though.
BTW I have practiced porting on a suzuki g13b head and on my first try it came out fine and flowed a ton better.

Sounds like you know what you're doing. Practice beforehand is definitely crucial, though. Maybe it's not as complicated as I thought.
