starting problems

When I try to start the pathfinder, it either starts on the first try, or it clicks and starts on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th try. I had the starter replaced, but that is not the problem. Mechanic worked on it for hours and came up that it must be something with the electrical system. Maybe the ignition switch connection. Now, there is a black wire with a yellow of pink stripe (can't remember right now) coming from the ignition switch. You see the same color wire coming from a relay located to the left of the window washer fluid if your looking over the driver side fender. The relay switch is grey color. What I did is run a wire from the ignition switch to the relay switch thus bypassing the wire running somewhere underneath the dash. It started . So it must be that maybe this wire is bad, where I don't know, it is too difficult to follow this wire underneath the dash among the hundreds of wires. Does anyone know anything about a problem like this!!
