1988 egt

When I'm idle or sitting in traffic I smell pure fuel, not exhaust. I replace the fuel filter, plugs(when I did this, the #4 plug was broken), I was told the car was mixing too rich.. Should I change the fuel regulator?

Was just wondering if you got the problem taken care of? Have a 1988 Escort and actually have fuel coming out the exhaust. Changed the head gasket and now can't get it to idle and we have a lot of gas. Not sure if didn't get something back together right or timing on the idle but really not sure on the gas thing.
