How to adjust carburator?

Hey all, I have a 1984 Subaru GL 4 door sedan. It has the 1800 engine, and a Carter-Weber single barrel carb. I need to adjust the carburator, because when the car is running, the tach is steady at 2000 RPM, and I know its supposed to be only 700 RPM. I have a chilton manual on this car. It says that the idle mixture screw is in the throttle plate, facing away from the engine. I looked, and found a hole, put a screw driver in there, and nothing! From the way the picture looks, the screw has a slotted head, but I cant feel anything in there. I need to get the RPM's down. Are you supposed to change it with the idle mixture screw? Or is there another way?

Also, the car seem to overheat a lot. It only does it in 5th gear. When I downshift to fourth, the temp goes down. What's going on with this thing? THe car has lots of problems, kind of fixing things when I can. I fan comes on, so I know the temp. sensor is okay.

Oh, one more thing. THe clutch slips a lot. Is there a way to adjust it? the book only tells how to adjust the free play of the pedal and how to take out the slack on the clutch cable. It slips bad in 4th. When I give it a little more gas, without my foot on the pedal, the engine speeds up, and the car stays at the same speed. I let off the gas, I can feel the a clunk as the engine gets back to speed with the tranny. THis car is a mess, but it is the only thing I have to drive to go to work.

ANy help is appreciated.

I have the same vehicle with the same carburation set up. The mixture scre is indeed in the front side of the card. It is a slotted screw and is reachable with a small screwdriver. You can use a mirror in conjuction with a flash light to see into the hole and view the slot's orientation. With that high an idle, you might also want to check the thermosensor located on the top front of the engine on the passenger side. If it's bad it will cause an idle that high. Check the computer which is beneath the dash cover located under the steering column. It's light will flash a numerical code in Morse if there is a malfunction. I THINK that the code for the thermosensor is 21 or 22 but i may not remember correctly. Your book should give you the trouble codes.
As for the clutch, the only way to adjust that problem is with a new clutch disc. Not the answer you wanted I'm sure.
Over heating may be suggestive of needing radiator cleaning or thermostat problems. I had one come apart and partially block the coolant passage.
On the upside, it's a very tough car. Mine has 328,000 miles on it and it's still going stong.
