1994 EXP tranny ?

my 1994 EXP will crank in P and N and run fine. I shift into any other gear and car shifts into gear and just quickly dies kind lurches a little. Was running fine till a came to a stop and kinda lurched and died. Could it be filter clogged? was a 1-2 qts low on fluid .
