I was talking to this guy that builds turbos in MD, and he told that I should be venting into the atmoshere because a 14psi the surge can make the compressor wheel spin backwards hurting the turbo. Is this true?????
Next I was talking to a couple of guys at MachV in VA they told me to vent the car back into the intake because it will better no bucking or running rich. Is this tru?????
Third, they told me that the 1st gen crushed BOV is to weak to be vented into the atmosphere. If so which one do I get. They also told me not to get the GReddy type-s it is for civics with low boost.

BS.....i have one and im pushing 18 psi and have no problems venting it, and its one of the louder bov in my area

No.

Yes.

I agree the type S is a POS. I did run the TurboXS RFL vented for a while, and it worked ok. But that valve is a bigger POS than the greddy. The 1g is a very good BOV, and has damn near run 10s.
I ran the BOV vented for years, trying several valves, and several modifications to the 1G valve. I can tell you from actual expereience that yes you can vent the 1g valve if you set it up to do so, but the car will ont run at its peak with a vented BOV unless you set the mas air metering system up to do so. This means a HKS VPC, or a MAF Translator. Its that simple. ;) Many people will step in and say "I run my BOV vented and its fine," which is fine, but if they did the extensive aquisition I have done, they would see that its really not "fine." ;)
Just use a 1g BOV, and leave it dumped back in. Until you are ready to ditch the stock MAS airmeter system somewhere above 400 WHP and go with a REAL BOV, like the Tial, or the infamous discontinued SARD.
No.

I have a HKS SSQV bov and it is loud as hell...I absolutely love it. I can run up to 20 psi and I have mine vented to the atmosphere without a problem. Some cars it'll work, others wont. I guess I got lucky :smokin:

Its the sme on all cars. Datalog it and you will see that its not exactly ideal. The ones who think its ok are the ones that dont know where to look ;) How do you know its not leaking at 20 psi? No way to know unless you pressure test the system, and compare IPW and IOT at a given fuel pressure per airflow/rev to a wideband. Every valve I have ever seen tested leaked except for the Tial and SARD (discontinued japanese valve). And in order to run a valve that large, you need to ditch the stock MAS and go with a speed density or hot wire setup. I've looked into all this extensively over many years... It all depends on your your goals. For maximum power, venting the BOV on a stock MAS isnt ideal. But yes it may run "fine."

i eventualy vented my type-s and the only problem i had was that it needed to be set a little harder so it wouldn't "hick-up" if i closed the throttle while the clutch was still engaged (ie 1/4 sec. before shifting). I'm not claiming more than 230 hp to my best guess (could be wrong), so i'm not sticking that much power, and only on a t-25 @ 16-18 psi, so..

The smaller the turbo you run, the more power you stand to lose to a vented BOV. The larger the turbo is, the more easily it can make up for lost boost withmore flow, without adversely affecting Pressure Ratio and therefore efficiency. At low boost though and a tight setting odds are you are mostly ok. The only way to tell is to do an intake pressure test (vfaq). :)
