Sounds like your Air Flow Meter is bad. Also check your air filter and your snow screen if your vehicle has one. Aftermarket air filters can also cause the air flow meter to go bad. Check with your dealer, I remember a new technical service bulliten that warranties the air flow meters for 70K.

yeah it could be your mass air flow sensor, I just had mine replaced by dealer at no cost, they are recalled on my 2000 jetta so you should be able to get them replaced for life, which is nice, since they are around $350.00 a pop, rip off!

Our VW dealership is now selling the mass air flow sensors for $49, I guess they're trying to prevent a massive outcry to recall them. Before replacing it I would check the production date number stamped on it (not at the Bosch part number, but at the front side near the electrical connector)- anything with a XX/99 go ahead & replace. If it's a XX/00 or up I'd first check all the vacuum lines near the back of the valve cover - the braided ones were terrible to deteriorate (VW has a rubber replacement set) and would set all types of codes, including those listed above. That snowflake screen is also worth getting rid of.

Dumb question, Where is the air flow sensor located?

After fixing the problem for code PO411, how do you shut off the check engine light?
