Drivetrains in Jimmys (my question is at the bottom)

Here we go, I have a 1999 S-15 Jimmy 4dr SLE 4WD I have replaced almost everything in my drivetrain. First it started out with the trany sliping in low gears, I checked all my fluids and everything seemed fine. Then the check engine light came on so I ran a diagnostics test on it. It was a valve in the trany, it is common for them to go out. It was a $100 part, but it could have cost me a whole rebuild. Then I had a whinning noise coming from the front wheels, it only whined at low speeds, and while turning. I started doing some trouble shooting, and found all three of my front axel seals to be leaking. So I started to tear into it, let me tell you this isn't am easy job. Well I found the frount wheel bearings to be shot, this was almost a $500 dollar project (the dealer wanted $900).
Now I have having problems with my 4wd When I try to select it will shift into the desired setting but when I try to change it back I get no response, but if I shut the vehicle off and then restart it, it will switch back into the desired setting. I had the computer changed 2 years ago, I dont know what it could be.

Sounds like a valve/relay not working properly.
Is 4wd shaft engagement by vacuum or electrical application ?
