WAX:Do I need it?

Do I need to use wax to get that mirror/glossy look on my models? Or can I get that look with just the 8000 grit over 3 layers of paint?

Not really...I've found polishing the model (I use Tamiya Compound) brings out the shine. I'm assuming when you say 3 layers of paint, you mean 3 wet coats - cos it is very possible to polish to paint layers if you're not careful.

Some people do, some don't. It's a matter of preference. If you get a chance to try it, do, then decide for yourself if it makes a difference to you.

I'm sure you'll see plently of great paint jobs in this forum that didn't use wax. And then plenty more that did...

I'd say if you are going to use 8000 grit sandpaper on your finished paintwork then yes you will need some cutting or polishing compound to finish it off. Realise that polishing compound is different to wax.

If you are happy with the finish as is and don't need to sand it or anything then wax is probably a matter of preference.

What are 'wet' coats?
