Fan problems.

On my 99 Taurus SE the fan for the AC/Heater only works on the highest setting. It works fine on the highest setting but shuts off when you set it to anything below that. Any ideas?

It sounds like the temp sensor is giving false readings to the relay. Replace the temp sensor and your problem should be gone.

blower resistor. $12+- part. Located behind glove box most likely.

The blower circuit is wired to bypass the resistor on high, so it will always work on high.

Checked out the blower resistor and it was all rusted and corroded away. Picked up a new one at the Ford Dealership, and moments later problem solved. Thanks for the help Mikeemon.

Located behind glove box most likely. It would be right in the big duct.

Cool - I think mine is having the same problem (2000 SE), but I should be getting this fixed for free.

Is this an indication of anything else that could be wrong, causing this?

I really doubt that it is a symptom of other problems. The resistor has a series of exposed thin wires used to regulate current flow. Apparently the things just overheat and die. Although, you may try maintaining the cabin air filter (if so equipped) regularly to ensure that there is adequate airflow in the system to keep that thing coolish.

Definitly the blower motor resistor. It is held in to the air box beside the blower motor. Removing the glove box door gives you access. It is retained by two 7mm screws. It is sort of rectangular shaped. The circuit is wired as a default for saftey. It will blow through the defrost vents so you can still see in the event the windshield fogs up. :sunglasse

Yup, it was the blower motor resistor. A relatively cheap and easy fix. I also doubt its a symptom of other problems, the resistor showed some signs of corrosion and overheating. Thats my take on it. Thanks everyone, for all the help and advice.

I looked and looked on line for an answer to the same question and found this about 5 minutes after I registered.
I had the cabin filter replaced some time ago at an instant oil change place and found that after a really heavy rain I would have a passenger side floorboard full of water. Finally figured out why (there's a plastic cover over the filter with a small flap that was folded up on top of the filter. Put it down to the side where it belonged and no more problem)
I had a phone charger that was submerged and shorted and the fan only worked on high afterward. Seemed to be related but apparently not.
Now I figure the problem is the resistor got wet and corroded and that the timing was just a coincidence.
I will take a look in daylight tomorrow and hopefully be enjoying A/C on less than hi settings again.

EDIT: Removed and replaced the rusted/corroded resistor and woo-hoo!, I have low and medium fan speeds again.
