ummmmmmmm....ok. Let me try this again. Wat is the 0-60 on a 1.8t 5 speed. Im guessing it's somewhere around 7 seconds, but I'm not quite too sure.
THANK YOU

its supposed to have a 7.5 0-60mph time but it seems alot quicker than that.

that is vwoa's posted time. on the 20th ae they posted 0-60 at 7.6 secs, c&d got 6.5 out of it. the 5 speed is said to be a little quicker.

the 337 is a 6 and runs bout 7.7 depending on alot of variations. so the 5 is going to bit a bit slower.
u shouldnt buy a car base on its 0 to 60, the GTI is a good car, but buy it for its 20 valves not the o to 60, cuz any car can have a quick o to 60 wit time and money. theres alot of tech and innovation in the gti buy it for that.

Just because a car has a 6 speed as opposed to a 5 does not mean that will accelerate to 60, or past the 1/4 mile faster. In fact, in most cases you have to shift one more time with a 6 than you would with a 5, and that shifting usually equates to a slower pass.
So I tell you again, before you correct and/or try to tell other people... know your ass from a hole in the ground.

hey calm down buddy, and just a quick question, whens the last time you shifted into a sixth gear for a pass unless your running 10 seconds at 160

im sorry about that, i read your reply wrong, yes you have to shift one more time but the gear ratios are geared more towards acceration because you have an extra gear for cruising, so if you are a good driver you will get a better time

hahaha 6th gear does not just stack on top of the other gears. All the ratios are lowered in order to keep the space between the gears to a minimum. You won't shift into 6th... but instead of being in 3rd, you might hit 4th... which would equate to an extra shift.

sorry man, but its a proven fact that no matter how good of a driver you are... if you have to make an extra shift in a straight drag race, it will cost you time. I mean look at the WRX STi when compared to the Mitsu Evo. The Evo has a 5 speed the WRX a 6 speed. But... they are nearly identical in 0-60 and 1/4 mile, because in both cases the driver of the WRX has to make an extra shift.
The real use of a close-ratio transmission is not straight racing, its when you're on canyon roads or country roads or especially on a track. In these cases you're constantly accelerating and decelerating and its a challenge at times to find a gear that perfectly matches your speed. A closer-ratio transmission gives you more choices.
Certainly that extra gear is good for cruising in some cases. But normally 6th gear is not much higher ratio than 5th gear in an equal car with a 5 speed transmission.
Hope that made sense.

if that made any sense than why did they put a sixth gear in the 20th gti, unless they want it to be a race car or go on canyon roads?

Because that IS what it is designed for! It's designed to be able to go fast through the twisties and curvies of fun roads. In addition to that, the original GTi in europe WAS supposed to be a racecar, and it was, and it was succesful as such.
They are however NOT designed to be drag racers... because VAG is smart enough to realize that drag racers are generally complete morons. Ok, maybe its not for that reason, but the point still stands.

ya got it the other way around
the 1.8T runs 60 at 6.5-6.8
the VR6 runs at low-mid 7

0-60 time is technically 6.4, the same as an R32, no acceleration difference, just mad handling difference. 6.4 is nice, but a WRX sti for the same money as an R32 does it in @ 4.9 sec.

BFD, the R32 will be running rapid circles around the WRX when the years start catching up to it.
The building quality between the two tips the seesaw heavily towards the R32. It's a more mature version of cars like the WRX.

Agree with that guy (exept maybe the moron thing)... VW are slow "goers" in a drag race but you should see a GTI in a real race... it's all about cornering, taking curves, handling and braking... well, what a real race car should do !!

Well duh, they're almost all front wheel drive. FF's aren't made to drag, despite what people constantly seem to do with them.
And the 6 speed on the Ani. Editions. The 6th gear is basically an overdrive for highway cruising unless you've tuned it up a lot already.

I'm the happy owner of a 20th AE GTI. 6speed. The 1.8T is about 7 seconds for 0-60. Once you chip, intake and exhaust you're looking in the 6s area. I've driven 5 and 6 speed. you do have to shift more with the 6 speed. There is an extra gear there.
