DIY steering wheel/pedals

Hi all

I've been toying with the idea of buying/building a steering wheel/pedal set for my PC. Now I will probably buy something (Logitech MOMO Racing is on top of the list, but I'm open to other suggestions) and will attempt to build another one myself, just something fun and something that would suit my requirements. I'm an ardent Grand Prix series gamer, btw, and I have a pretty clear picture of what I want from the game controller.

I know it's a long shot, but perhaps someone could answer some of the questions and/or direct me to some other useful resources. Now if I decided to make the device work through a gameport, it would be quite easy. But I think I want USB, and from what I heard, it's a pita to make without a donor game controller (which I won't have, I'm afraid). And my knowledge of what is involved with making it all work through USB is quite minimal, and I'm being oerly generous to myself :)

Soooo... What do I need? Some sort of microchip to connect to the buttons and resistors? Could it be available at a shop separately? How many axes and buttons can I connect to the USB port?

And should I even mention force feedback? :uhoh:

Thanks in advance to anyone with useful information!
Alex

well the electronics itselft will be hard but don't forget that after you build it you need to do some hardcore programing to make the drivers for your homemade sys

Sigh. Oh well. I guess I'll try to make something simpler, like a gameport device and see how that turns out!
