I have a 1998 chevy malibu. Everytime after fill up it revs uncontrolably... i have to keep my foot on the gas to force it to idle at about 1500 RPM for about 2-3 minutes before it calms down.. and then it wants to stall after you drive off. The purge valve and purge solenoid have been replaced... still no luck ... any suggestions... thanx

I know it sucks--but if you can get someone to scan your error codes--see if the throttle position sensor is working correctly (although that would have nothing to do with the tank being empty or full) they can be intermittant when they go bad--it's about a $20 part and easy to install.

Maybe you have some water in your tank--and every time you put gas in it you mix the water up so it gets drawn into the fuel system? I think they sell fuel system products to eliminate water.

Good luck

From the date of your posting, this may come to you a little late. This problem plagued me through serveral shops, and none could figure it out. Then I returned to the dealer for one more go and they solved it. Direct quote from my service paper work:
Traced to and repaired purge solonoid hoses (reversed/backwards).

My 2001 Malibu started racing its engine when I put it in park. Is this very serious?
