Hey, Just bought a 1991 Firebird w/ 141,000 miles. Has a few problems but seems to run OK. Are there any specific things I should look out for. I plan on changing ALL the fluids, replacing the brakes. etc and giving it a good tune up. The motor that closes the hatch doen't work, is that a common problem ??? I'm thinking about replacing the struts and shocks
with these...

Any other recommendations??

Also, since I've had good success in my Steath and my daugther's Maxima
I thought about installing these..

when you say that the motor doesn't work does it totally not work or does it just not grab the hatch and hold it down because I know with mine sometimes the latch gets "confused" for lack of a better term and you have to take off the panel that covers it and use a piece of round stock or a screw driver and press it in there like it was the latch part in order to make it "wake up" you have to put a fair amout of weight on it to activate it. this should work even though it is kind of a pain in the ass. other than that check the relay for the hatch (it's under the dash on a 90 so probably the same on yours) lightly sand the contacts and try it again I had that problem with mine once. It gets a build up on it and doesn't make contact. Other than that check the ground and make sure it's attached one of these should work. hope this was helpful.

The headlight doors have a flakey mechanisim that drives them. Inside the gear box attached to the drive motor there are 3 plastic rollers about 1/2 inch long. After so long a time they will self destruct and just crumble into pieces. When this happens the headlight will not stay up, the motor will run, but headlight just flops. You can take the cover off the gear box, clean it out, then buy a hot glue stick for a hot glue gun. The sticks are the same diameter as the rollers, Use a razor knife and cut 3 pieces off the glue stick the same size as the rollers and put them in the gear box. they last about 3 years under normal use and a 30 cent glue stick beats the heck out of a 185 dollar motor replacement.
