Earlier you asked about those hoses going into the firewall. If that is what you are referring to in your photo, they are attached to the heater core. The heater core is accessed by removing the dash.

what is missing is the heater hoses. they aren't there. your heater core is right on the other side of the black square shape that the two disconnected nipples are at the top of. It looks like for some reason someone rerouted the heater hoses to bypass the heater core. and the only reason to do that is if the heater core was leaking, and they didn't want to pay to get it fixed. replacing that heater core on a taurus isn't that simple. the first thing i would do, is either buy the chilton's manual, or find one in the library to look at. to remove the heater core requires disasembling your instrument panel, and ...well, pretty much everything beneath the dash. not to mention draining your coolant and a/c system. yes, your a/c system too. I would reroute the heater hoses back to their correct places, and test it to see if it really leaks. just make sure you have a couple people watching in different places to spot any leaks. the last thing you want is your car flooding with antifreeze. good luck my friend. and get those warm clothes ready, it looks like you might need them.
