Firts off let me say this post is not intended to offend anayone or to rag on the gti. Im just here to get some info on it before i decide to buy one.
Ok im thinking of getting an 00 or up one with the 1.8 with manual or auto. Which one is better for the Gti? I've driven one before and it was manual and great but which one do you guys like more? My biggest? about the car is that i have read in some places that vw's don't have good reliblity is this true? I know from having 2 neon's what bad relibity and lots of maintaince can be but they are fun to drive when they are working. What things if any are know to break or fail on gti's or vw's in general. Im just trying to gague how much maintince i will have to do on this car compared to my neon's. And also is there a big aftermarket for gti's i.e intake, exhaust, cams, turbo upgrade, ect?

go to www.vwvortex.com and look away. they are very modable. a chip, intake, and ehaust away from 210whp. i like my 6 speed, not very inclined to using auto as they get worse mileage. but really check out www.vwvoortex.com they have awesome forums! :2cents:

Manual is a lot more fun to drive and coincidentally has less problems. VW is infamous for its small problems, but after driving a neon, you shouldn't real find it to be bad. I have a 2001 1.8t (manual) with 64000 miles and I have a couple of problems. THe number one problem being the Mass Air Flow Sensor going bad every 40-50k miles. Other than that, just a little rattling and problems with my monsoon sound system. weird crackling on fast increase of volume. Anyway, my opinion is, if you want a fast fun car, go with the GTI, but if you are looking for boring ass reliability, go buy a corolla or civic... but you don't want to do that do you?

If its small stuff that goes bad on them thats no prob for me. Its big stuff like my headgasket going bad on my neon 4 times in 9 years now that pisses me off.(Hg's are a problem for neon's) I'd much rather have a Gti than a civic.

Don't get a newer one get and old one (mk1 or mk2) and fill it with new parts goodness. How much does a '00 cost? $13-14000. You could do more to an older car and make it better than a new car.
...or is that too much work for ya.

Stick to the old style golfs mk1s or 2s.
i have had golfs for ages and never had anything go majorly wrong with them. they are quite possibly the most reliable old cars that i have ever driven. also very robust and some of the first cars to have a safety cage built into the shell of the car so good in crashes if ever involved. the only thing that is a problem is the clutches going after about 100k
hope it helps and stay away from the fattie shopping trollies

...and even 100k on a clutch is still pretty good considering how most of them are driven.
