What the FUCK!!! its now costin me $5.76 a pack at the cheapest place!! Why the fuck are us smokers targeted for these crazy taxes! Why not tax the fuck out of McDonalds, maybe we'll have less fatasses around!

Christ! Smokes should be no more than 2.50 a pack. Hell American cig's in EUROPE were 2.50, so they should be 2.00 here. I'm so pissed off. Yeah so what if it kills me and destroys my lungs and it doesn't smell too great. ITS MY FUCKING DECISION! I already can't smoke within 100 miles of anyplace "public", some little shit towns around ehre I can't even smoke on the sidewalk! I shouldn't get punished for something that's perfectly legal! Talk about taxation without representation!

I'm so fuckin pissed. Of course not many people will agree with me and say "good riddance" to smokes, but if you REALLY want us to stop, just ban the damn things. And that still won't make us stop.

Man. I'd LOVE to see the shitstorm that would start if the gov't starting taxing the FUCK out of anyone driving anything other than an econobox (but sports cars and SUV's use so much gas! and they kill people! Why not?!!), but when it comes to ripping ME off for my smokes, everyone just looks the other way.

So here's a big FUCK YOU! to anyone who agrees to this stupid government bullshit!

<lights up a smoke> :sly:

Cigs really cost that much?

I had no idea......

I chew gum, it's my vice like smoking is yours.....about 3 packets a day of Wrigleys, that's the packets out of those 8-pack strips that cost $1.69 at Walmart.

The day gum costs more than a pack of cigs, I'll think about smoking.

Oh yeah, and what Oz said too....about the kiddies.

Here's one for you Steel :smokin:

That's 1.7 times what you pay. There's always someone, somewhere who is getting ripped off more than you are...

There is a reason for it- and its basic economics really- on fact it should be damn common knowledge- Cigarettes have (Negative) externalities- this generally means that they affect a third pary outside of the seller/consumer purchase (ie- Passivesmoking, tax-dollar healthcare costs for keeping smokers alive etc.........) hence they must be taxed to a more desireable point where society wants them.............Sure there are other things that aren't taced enough- but taxing cigarettes makes more than enough economic sense in the long run...............For those of us who DON'T smoke............

Either grow your own Tobacco, or stop smoking - it's not like smoking is good for anything anyway (except wasting time and money)

Or you could always go to Mexico, and get really cheap cigarettes that aren't pumped full of life-shortening chemicals designed to make you more complacent to the government by giving you a chemically induced lobotomy. Don't think I can write more about that though, Big Brother's gonna have to shoot me if I do.

Why'd you start? That's what I don't understand...I mean, you KNOW they are addicting, and once you're addicted the gov'm't and tobacco companies have you in the palm of their hand. They could raise prices to $30 a pack and smokers would still find a way to buy. It's like putting handcuffs on and handing the key to Big Tobacco and the gov'm't.

The thing that makes ME mad about all of this is how my tax $$ are paying to SUBSIDIZE the tobacco farmers, and then paying AGAIN for those stupid self-righteous TV anti-smoking ads and I DON'T EVEN USE THE DAMNED THINGS.

Can't quote the exact article, but the Dominion recently reported that the cost of treating smoking-related illnesses in NZ was approimately one-third of the tax revenue taken from tobacco products. You're damn right it makes sense to be a non-smoker in NZ,if you smoke here, not only is the government determined to legislate your habit out of public places, they are more than happy to extort your money whilst doing so.

That's not true, Tobacco can be used for all sorts of things - like as use as a lettuce substitute for your hamburger - or as garnish on your fancy plate. Even your carpeting and haircare products are made out of it, and it's what powers our rockets to the moons. Or at least that's what it's do if I were president - elect me in the year 203-something.

My folks smoke like a chimney. My sisters and I thought the damn things reeked so we never picked up the habit. I might have had ten cigarettes in my life.

I don’t care how badly someone wants to destroy their health. Let the cigarettes go for 2 bucks or whatever a pack as long as the the smoker pays for their own health coverage. Raise the rates of that coverage like they do with auto insurance for dangerous drivers. If they can’t pay or won’t pay for insurance and won’t pay for health care when they need it, let them rot.

I have no sympathy for someone crying foul on cigarette taxes. Until the health care cost is shifted directly to the smoker, it needs to be taken to care for all the illnesses it causes down the line.

Although It seems that i am anti-smoker its quite the opposite. I'm very pro smoker. You see, people have a choice to smoke or not, and they know of the health risks, yet some people still choose to smoke.

Smoking kills off all the stupid people in society. Anyone who smokes is too stupid to live anyway, so everytime they inhale they are one step closer to the grave. The less stupid people we have around this planet the better. Stupid smokers will die, so the more jobs available to me. Smokers will die, so less people on the road.

Would you even bother if cars cost twice as much as they do, just because of taxes? Oh, and twice as much for insurance too. Dumbass, i dont mind a FAIR tax, but this is way beyond fair.

i say tax the hell out of it, the more the better. Then take that money to give us some relief on our income taxes. I even say do the same to alcohol. I drink, but it would make it a tax I choose to pay. Not have it taken from me before I even get the money.

that will not happen though. That extra money would go into someone's pocket so they can have some cushy job.

I'm not even going to try and say I know American health care costs/economic influences, etc. But I do know that in Canada, smokes are going for around 10 CAD a pack (and sometimes 14 at the bar). But this tax DOES pay for the smokers health care. When that person comes into the hospital for pulmonary carcinoma, heart disease etc, the taxes he/paid will fund his required care. Someone has to pay for it, why the hell should I pay extra federal/income tax to fund this idiot's habit/care? Smoking is a choice, and in making that choice you are responsible for any consequences of it. Fortunately in Canada health care is free, and no one can/will just rot.

My mom and I buy our cigarettes from a native american wholesaler place called iroquois tobacco direct. i'm not 100% on how they function but I buy cartons of marlboro menthols for $25.85/carton, newports are $32.00. call 1-888-999-5509. it's all automated and you can set it up so they just ship the cigarettes regularly without having to keep re-ordering. it might be a little more for shipping out of NY but it's still better than $50.00+ for a carton. We like to just order a lot at one time cuz there's a flat shipping fee of $7.00 for 1-4 cartons but it's only $.50 per carton after that. These are untaxed cuz it's a native american organization and we can't tax them or something, like their casino's.
i'm only paying $2.85 a pack. $3.50-something if you factor in shipping. :smokin: :smokin: :smokin:

what are you talking about? what nation are you trying to gain independance from? smoking has to be up there in terms of dumbest habits ever. Even with alcohol there has been evidence that moderation can be beneficial to you (i.e glass of wine and decrease in chance of heart disease) If your dumb enough to start, pay the price. Smoking is a luxury, not a right, so like a luxury tax on vehicles, you'll pay for it. It's also a deterrent. If you don't wanna pay the tax, quit. Do you wine and complain to BMW about there obscene prices? no, you don't, and they dont have to charge you that price, but they do. You pay for certain luxuries, smoking is no different.
