I have a 97 jetta GLX VR6, and the A/C usually works after the car has been running awhile. But if you down shift or decrease speed it will stop blowing cold. When it does work it's super cold. This problem is driving me crazy! Has anyone had this problem?

It could be the condenser fan. If the fan is not working it is raising the system pressure causing the temp to rise. When you drive especially continuesly the air blowing through the grill cools the condenser. This may be it, just a guess though. Good luck.

when you first start your car, turn the a/c, pop the hood and check the your a/c compressor and see if the clutch is engaged.( the center hub will be spining. ) It sounds like your low on charge. trace your a/c lines from the compressor to the fire wall and to the condenser.. I justed fixed my wife's jetta. it had a leaking fitting at the firewall where that plastic covers both lines. look for oily dirty spots. thats the sign of a leak. You won't really know until you hook some gauges and see what the pressure readings are. It will give you an idea where to look.
