Thinking about getting a tat

Howdy fucking pardners,
Been thinking about getting a tattoo sometime in the next few months. Want to get like 3-5 snow capped mountains on my right shoulder. Sort of like a line drawing, but with a bit of fill in it too. A few questions - is anyone good at designing these sort of things? What should I look for in a good tattoo parlour?

:)

I'm no designer, but I do have a tat, so I might be qualified to offer advice on a parlour.

Look for one with a good reputation. Ask friend where they got theirs, and make a list of places to visit.

When you do visit, ask questions, and make sure you're satisfied with their answers. Check on how they sterilize their equipment and ask to see it. Look for cleanliness and good housekeeping.

Ask to see examples of the artists' work. If they're good, they'll have portfolios to show potential buyers. Look for simple things, such as staying in the lines, smooth curves where there should be smooth curves, sharp lines, etc.

Above all, be comfortable with a place before you commit to their work. This is something you will carry with you for the rest of your life, so you can't afford any snap decisions here.

i just grabbed some random pic of a mountain, and i made it kind look like three, and added the snow caps, not sure if this is kinda what you want or simpler, just pm me or reply in this thread i guess.

Darn. When I read the title I thought of the phrase "tit for tat".

I figured you finally figured out what a tat was and where it gets traded in.

i've heard it's more of an annoying feeling then actual pain...

ah well. i've had alot of bad pain in my life, i think i can take a tat...

i'm also pretty sure i'm getting one. on my birthday, which is December 20th. me and a couple of friends are going and all getting one.

i really don't have any concrete ideas yet...

one idea i had was a maple leaf (to show my Canadian heritage) but instead of being filled in with the typical red, fill it in with the colors of the Irish flag, orange white and green, to show homage to my irish background. then maybe add some celtic design around it or something.

anyone wanna draw that for me or add to it? that's just one of my ideas...i need to decide on something soon.

Oh, and here's mine, for reference sake. I'm of the Irish too, S13_Iketani.

[QUOTE=S13_Iketani]i've heard it's more of an annoying feeling then actual pain...[QUOTE]

Actually the needle is moving so fast that it is basically like taking a sharp needle, stabbing it about 1-2 mm into your skin, and then tearing your skin by dragging it along. IMO that would hurt pretty damn bad. The good news is that it goes numb after maybe 10 minutes.

Im not saying that you cant take it Oz, but my teacher who's an ex-marine said that gettin a tat is pretty painful. So just be prepared.

Good luck with the tat.

yo S13_Iketani not sure if this is what you were looking for, but heres somethign i did really fast, and i onyl added the black outline so that it stands out against af's light background. You can use it if you want but if not then watever.

that's pretty good De$i...but i was thinking of the stripes (of orange white and green) going up and down inside the leaf...instead of on an angle...

and then get a celtic circle around it or something like that...

keep in mind this is just an option, an idea. i've got a couple of other ideas bumping around in my head...some car-related, snowboard related etc...

i figured this one would work the best since there's always a chance i could stop snowboarding (although NOT BLOODY LIKELY), or a chance that my taste in cars could change (also not bloody likely), but if they do, then the tattoo would be rendered obsolete...with this one, i'll ALWAYS be Irish and ALWAYS be Canadian, no matter what happens to me. :) but we'll see...

another tat i wanted is like ci5ic's. the little copyright symbol (the c inside the circle) and then my birth year, just in plain black ink. no frills. hope you don't mind me using your idea, mike... :icon16:

Well seeing as I have 9 I suppose I could provide some insight...

1st...look online for pics, never get "flash art" which are the pics that are on the walls at the tattoo places. Always try too be original or get your buddy who can draw hook you up.

2nd...Brian said they are more annoying than actual pain, this is half true and half not depending on location they can hurt like a motherfucker or just be a lil annoying my forearms and the back of my arm hurt, my biceps and calves did not hurt they were just annoying.

3rd...Think it through dont go on impluse you could end up regretting it.

Not worried abot the pain. Life is pain.

Desi, not quite what I'm looking for - more of a line drawing with a bit of texture in black and white in about the same size as Atomis' tat. (Nice tat BTW  )

If anyone wants to have a stab at drawing it, would be much obliged. :)

A little like this. Kind of craggy mountain peaks in a range with snow caps and light/darkness on opposing sides. :)

it doesnt hurt too bad,but it all depends on where it in.if you get it somewhere with alot of fat or muscle then it wont be to bad,but if you get it somewhere right on the bone, its gonna be bad,and whatever you do,dont go to get it while your drunk because i read about someone who did and alcohol makes your blood thinner so he bleed like crazy

Not only that, but a reputable place won't allow you to get one if you're intoxicated. The blood-thinning issue aside, say you're drunk off your ass and offer $5000 to the artist to tattoo a portrait of Michael Jackson on your ass? :uhoh: :eek7:

The pain is negligible. Mine was done almost squarely on my right shoulder muscle. The best I can compare it to is having a edged object pressing against your skin for a long period of time. The pain is sharp and bright at first, but as it goes on, it begins to dull. Your brain will release endorphins to counter the pain.

Thought of more to add:

After it's done, your artist will likely give you care instructions. Follow them carefully. Remeber, you're basically walking around with an open wound on your body at first.

Keep it clean with soap and water, and keep it covered for the first day. Soon, it will scab up, and it will feel like a raised design at light touch. DO NOT PEEL OFF THE SCAB. You'll take some of the ink with it, and then you'll have light or not-there places.

Make sure whatever you use to wash it is clean and soft. I used just my hand at first, then as it healed moved up to a soft washcloth. Cleanliness is important, an infected tattoo site is NO fun. Eventually it will heal fully, and you can wash it like you normally would.

Lastly, make damn sure you will want to look at this design for the rest of your life. I think it might have been someone on here that advocated drawing the design out, then hanging it in a prominent place where you'll see it every day. If, after 6 months or a year, you're not tired of looking at it yet, then go for it.

Luck!

I have a few only words of advice, check the place out make sure its clean, he should throw away the needles, bring everything new out of the package, use seperate ink bottles, and all that stuff you don't want to get hepatitis from some scuzz-bag giving you a tattoo like my friend did because he wanted to save a few bucks and not use the "expensive" place I go to.

That's the closest yet. Cheers Mike! But even simpler than that, just 3 mountain peaks with smooth flowing lines of slightly varying heights. :) Maybe I'll just have to explain/draw it myself. But then again, maybe not :shakehead

good job, Mike...but they don't look very skii-able to me... :uhoh:

De$i - fantastic job. pending any other revelations or great ideas, i think that might be "it". although i might get them to do the celtic circle in black instead of white... and now that i think of it, maybe put the leaf on top of the circle instead of below....other then that though, :bigthumb:

Oz go see a tattoo parlour, tell em what you want and they should draw you up a few options which you can choose from, or choose bits from. I did with mine, took her about 20 minutes to do up 5 or 6 different styles (not that my tat is technical) and she chose her fave and I liked it too. And she was cute, so that helped. ;)
