Hello, and thank you for reading. Im a newbie in here but know my way around a normal car engine except our 1989 Olds Calais 2.5. hing is Im in wheelchair and it broke down on me on the side of the road as I type this I am without car. The car was running perfect and then we stopped to talk to friend at their home, when we came back out, it would not start. After checking everything that one would normally check, I discovered that I had no spark but had power going tothe coil pack, both units. Can asomeone please offer help as being that we live in boonies this car is our only way to get around and my wife to work. Could the cam/crank senor failing have caused this mo start issue. The car turns over fine, gets gas, sounds like it wants to start but no spark.
Please if you have any ideas, please post back to me, I am trying to borrow the funds to get it towed home, being disabled on social security , due to drs mistake, and wifes' salary being low I have to do repair myself. Yes, I do drag myself out of chair and still twist wrench, I love working on engines but an unfamiliar with the Oldsmobile Ignition Coil pack.
Thanks and God Bless

This engine had a problem with the crank sensor cracking and filling the module connector with oil. The result would be an intermittent (or no) start condition...

Thank you Sir, Bill V. I have conntacted the parts store to have them order in a crank sensor. I had wondered if oil damage could play a part in this. The unit sits inline though lower then the oil sending unit. Olds had a bad sense of humor designing this engine with its idiosyncricies and paper insert lawn mower type oil filter. I will post the results of what we find and get to work in the next day or so,,,any other ideas , please keep them coming just incase..........

if there is no electricity coming out of the spark module, the problem usually is the the module or the packs. i know there is a problem with the crankshaft sensor on the 2.8 engine.

Just an update.....vehicle had to be towed to garage, there goes this months meds monies. The mechanic also replaced the coil pack with a unit that was working, still no spark, so it has has to be the sensor, Being today is Thanksgiving, have to wait til Friday to see if sensor fixes problem. I hope so, we want to be able to give our son some sort of Christmas. Being disabled and broke sks, especially when they say that we recve too much for any type of assistance with my meds. Guess being American and below poverty ;evel, even with wife working at best job she could find around here, doesnt count anymore, maybe I should become boat person and ask for new wheelchair van, bet they get on before I do

Actually my family can trace its roots directly to Canada, the Hull / Alymer Area. My great Grandfather (x generations back) was a mercenerary in the American Revolution, he was on the wrong side but he did it for the money as the saying goes, and he was granted a Tory Land Grant. We are both American and Canadian, but have been here for one hundred years plus. Thank you for looking out for us neighbors to the south, I think Canada is the best partner that we have int he world and the people of the USA arent even aware of it.

AAAYyyyyyye,,, many of us knw that you folks are there. Our family lives within driving distance of the border and visit your country a few times each summer. Our son learns the fact that people are people no matter what country thaey are in and we are all part of one race.
I spoke to the mechanic today, he still has gotten any spark and was getting ready to install the new sensor,(camshaft), so I will know something in the am. Thanks to all.

As another Canadian on this board, shekky does give a valid point about medicare in canada. However, meds aren't all paid and hospitals here have 12 to 24 hour waits in the waiting rooms. The care you get isn't the greatest. But, if you have private insurance and have money, you can go to a private clinic and get much better care.

Also, I have a friend in New Jersey who is also disabled. He gets a decent disability pension, and meds that are partially subsidized by the state gov. It can also be a matter of where you live in the US.

Its Sunday night and we spoke to the emchanic late last evening. Seems that all he has tried hasnt worked and he is resotrting to changing the computer in the am as soon as it gets delivered. HE was able to obtain a used unit , with a warranty, to be working. I pray that this fixes the problem, the cost is really hurt my little budget for the month and wonder how much Santa will leave for the wife and son. I am going to do without the pain meds and muscle relaxers this month due tot he bill. Yes they are a necessity, if you could see my stump and scars, haha.
Ill et the results of the computer swap be know . Thanks to all.
