What is the difference between a Twin-Turbo and a Sequential Turbo Setup?
If anyone knows a good website that also describes "turbos"...please insert.
Thanks

this is a very good question. twin-turbo is just refering to how many turbos there are, such as a 300zx twin-turbo. what ace$snyder wrote is pretty close, when people think of sequential turbo set up, they usually think of a smaller and larger turbo instead of then being both the same size. the reason for different size is to reduce lag. in a smaller turbine, lag is greatly reduce due to its size and effieciancy, but it's drawback is that the power created is limited. the larger turbo on the other hand works the opposite where it has more lag, but more power.
to get the best of both worlds, this is where the sequential turbo setup comes in to play. all this set up does is transfer the flow of exhaust from one turbine to another in order to relieved pressure buildup, create more power, and a more effiecient twin-turbo application.
going back to having different sizes, this doesn't mean they can't have two of the same turbos. the twin-turbo supra operates sequentially and chances are most of the other twin turbo vehicles. while driving somewhat slow or normal not much boost is needed so only one turbine is operational at low to mid boost. but if u wanted to go faster, the the ecu senses this acceleration sending a signal to the vsv's (vacuum switching valve) causing it to turn both turbines at moderate psi's. of course if want to smoke me and most of the other cars :loser:, push it all the way and you will have full boost from both turbos.

sequential is harder to spell!

Sequential is for the drag racers....alot of tuning and headachs go with these types of setups. But they are really fast............

if sequential is for drag racers why do most people with stock sequential turbo setups swap in one large one?

What stock sequential?

What stock sequential?
3rd gen RX-7 is good example.
Most TT cars with I motors are sequential as well.

one of my uncles use to have a 9 sec 3rd gen rx-7 that was sponsored by several companies. he pull out the stock sequential setup because the gains isn't as huge as one large aftermarket turbo but of course there is that dreaded lag. he reduce this by using nitrous to help spool the turbine and of course it was less of a headache. heres the sad part, right when i was getting into imports, he sold it for around 20 grand for drug money :disappoin. that car had over a hundred grand in aftermarket racing, show, and audio parts. but of course when it was raced, the car was gutted.

is it tru that downpipes, I/C's, and other exhaust and intake parts will reduce lag. ive also herd nitrous reduces lag as well.

big turbos will lag no matter what, nitrous helps but so does launching it at higher rpm. most "TT" cars are actually sequential, and most people swap them for larger turbos because if you've got the bottom end to use a larger turbo you've got the bottom end to spray on it to spool her up.

dont mean to but in put quick question sort of on subject... it is a 96 supra tt. friends dad had the motor sent away to be built and ordered alot of goodies to be put on. and is being assemble at twin's turbo's in anehim, california. i was wondering he said that his car would have around a 200 shot of nos. is this the shot of nos that would spool up the turbo in a drag race? he has said that it should run high 8's... it better, it's been at their shop for over five months now. but quality or quanity

well, a 200 shot will definitely spool up a big turbo, hehe. but I'm doubting that guy knows what he's talking about, I've seen some pretty damn big power (1000+) supras that aren't even close to the 8 sec. range. I'd like to see it (his motor is right down the street from me)

yeah i agree with you, most monstrous supras barely hit 8's even though they have the hp to back it up. the hardest part about having this power is how to bring it down to the wheels without the wheels going ballistic.

as much as i would love to see this supra run times like that i have to agree that it dose seem far feched...so "motor down the street" ehh, well it is in a red supra if that helps you find it and the engine is in the car they are working on the exhaust right now, and when it is done i will try and find out how in hell you put pictures on(try to get pics of him at the track). just some other info, the costum fabricated an ECU, intake manifold, exhuast, and turbo plumbing. these guys even waxed the engine bay, some that loves cars that much i would think would know how to make things with this supra work to at least run high nines. (i'm an opptomistic person)

Maybe if it's a full drag car with no interior and a fiberglass shell it'll be touching 8s...but yeah..no way is a street Supra gonna be that fast. like someone said before..'whats the difference between a 500hp supra, and an 800hp supra? nothing they both do the 1/4 in 11 seconds' or something like that..but uh yeah I think he's a bullshitter.
