i just watched south park with my brother and the topic today was mormons pushing their religion on other people. i don't have anything against religion, but im curious. if anyone else saw this episode, how accurate is it. the J. smith guy who finds gold plate with translation stones. how much of it did the creators of south park distort? b/c it made the j. smith guy look like an a-hole

A friend of mine saw that there were Jehova's Witness people were going door to door so he made up some bunk Jehovas Witness flyers real quick and went out with Ketchup and chalk, and drew an outline of a body, splattered the ketchup to look like blood and dropped the flyers all around it on the sidewalk. They passed his house by.

Not knowing the story myself, I couldn't verify it, but my co-worker said that when asked to re-translate the hidden pages, Joseph Smith was able to do so correctly, so that detail seems altered for comedic effect.
Remember also that Trey Parker is (was?) Mormon, and has made many jabs at the Mormon church before (Orgazmo, anyone? ;)), so this episode was probably just him using his soapbox to point the finger at them, just because he could.

That episode of South Park was hillarious. They did leave out the endless supply of food/toiletries that mormons keep as well. I went to this mormon girls house in high school and it was kinda strange.

I live under the Zion curtain and it sux I am not Mormon but i do live in Utah, all my life i have been pushed to convert I have missionaries come to my door at LEAST once month i used to have around 7 copies of the book of mormon, they were left on my doorstep by neighbors and others who felt that I needed to be saved from eternal damnation, that is I HAD 7 copies before I threw them out. Mormons feel that everyone in this state should conform to their beliefs that's why all the laws are geared towards their ideology in certain cities u can't even buy a beer on sunday it is against the law!!! and don't even think of trying to start a new bar or strip club or something like that because the city u want to start the business in will fight u tooth and nail, we just recently had a whole new slew of restrictions placed on our liquor serving laws, and we have the watered down beer a little while ago the restaurant wingers wanted to start selling beer on its menu, ohhhhhh boy that was a mistake there were protesters and threats of lawsuits. My question is this why do they care what other people do? why do they care if other people drink beer or alcohol or caffeine? it doesn't affect them, but yet they feel that everyone should conform to their standards are they so insecure in their own faith and self control that if a beer is present that they might drink it? are they so weak that they might accidentally wander into a strip club or are they such bad parents that one of their children might wander into a strip club past the bouncers and many employees or that they might get ahold of some alcohol? we have a theocracy for a government up here in Utah, 80% of the people in our state legislature are white mormon males, in fact i'm not sure but I think that one of the church's apostles is still in the legislature I can't remember if he still is but at one point there was one I went to a Salt Lake city council meeting recently and they started it with a prayer. The movie SLC punk is an AWESOME movie about Salt Lake everyone who wants to come to Utah should see it, it's also just a good movie by itself........anyway that's my rant for the sorry for it being so long but i needed to vent.

Actually when asked to translate the plates Joseph Smith and his apostles did translate them but they all got differing translations, besides the fact that the golden plates were never seen by anyone else except him and his apostles. I can't remember exactly it's been a long time since I have talked about the plates I believe he said that after they were translated they were destroyed or something so no one could refute the many differing translations all people had was his word.

thats the only problem i would have with any one of a different religion, i let you believe in what you want to believe, so let me do what i wanna do. all the mormon people at my school are just regular teenagers, i haven't met and mormon zealots yet.

You talk about J. Smith and the apostles, but what a LOT of people don't realize is that many of those apostles turned around and left the Mormon "church" (or the beginnings of it anyways) when J. Smith started consolidating power. They never said that they lied or that J. Smith made everything up, but I can just imagine the death threats. If you really want to learn more about the REAL Mormon "church", the part they won't tell you about until you're fully indoctrinated, I suggest you go to these websites:

There's also some Ex-Mormon communities on LiveJournal.com. Just do an interest search on mormon.
I'm not a Mormon myself, though I am Christian (I'm not goin' into "Mormons aren't Christians" 'cause I don't wanna offend anybody).
I became interested in the LDS after I dated one for a good long while, back in HS... she ALWAYS tried to convert me, and I just couldn't understand how she believed some of the things she was preaching.
But as an aside, I've been with a couple of LDS chicks, now, and they are the biggest cock-ho's...They're borderline nymphos!

I dont know what part of secluded utah you live in, but where I live, it is hardly like that. It all depends on how you look at it, or how ignorant you are. I live in a predominantly mormon neighborhood, and yes, when I first moved in, there was the knock on the door, and the missionaries did stop by. But after I politly told them no, I have yet to be asked to join. Sure, I get asked if we ever need help with stuff, but never to join, and that is after four years of living there.
So what if they start a meeting of with a prayer? Whats the difference in that, or putting my hand on the bible in court?

Hey Kris, I know you were using it as an example, but as far as I know, they don't do that whole swearing on a Bible thing anymore. It was ruled "unconstitutional", because of the Christian influence. Now they just raise their right hand.
I, for one, WANT there to be prayers at meetings and schools. I want the 10 Commandments posted. But then you have those who feel Christianity is being imposed upon them, those who want copies of the Commandments taken down, statues in courthouses taken out.
Question is, who's right? Should I be more concerned about my comfort, or my neighbor?
I said earlier that I wanted these things, but is it necessarily what's right for the country. Maybe we should have a separation of church (ANY church) and state.
Whaddya think?

(Here we go again)
Crap, I can't believe you, as a Christian, can say something as hypocritical and intolerant as that.
Mormonism is no more a cult than any one of many Christian churches. I believe you mentioned you were a Baptist? (or at least a Protestant) Well, ask any devout Catholic. Millions of them believe that all Baptists and all Protestants are cultists as well.
Why? Well Protestants turned their back on the Vatican and the Catholic church, to form their own with their own interpretations on God and the Bible. Look up your history book under Martin Luther, and find out why he nailed his list of grievences to the door of his church.
Now, how can you call the Mormons cultists when all they have done is to do the same thing that all Protestant religions have done?
Furthermore, your useage of the word 'cult' implies mind control and manipulation to separate and distinguish its members from the rest of society. Well, this is what ALL religions do, supposed cults and more traditional religions alike.
Crap, I mean to be as respectful as possible. You are as free to believe in whatever religion you want. But please do not label the Mormons as a cult. That is bigoted and intolerant.

Im not a baptist at all, they are way too conservative and take the bible out of context. But not as bad as catholics, they dont take all of the work of God as the truth. If anything there more of a cult than protestants. Now how can you say that im a hypocrit for saying that momanism is a cult. If you knew anything about the new testament or the bible you would agree with me that its a cult of people that have a deulted version of the gospel.

ok first off i am mormon pleas dont kill me.
second i believe that people have their beliefs ihave mine and i am not going to tell to believe in mine, but if you have a ? about i will happily answer it for.
third the mormon religion is not a cult and if you do have questions ask the people who knew it the best. the mormons im not going to ask my baptist friend a question a bout a catholic. that just doesnt make sense. the best people to ask would be the mormon missionaries they are there to preach the gospel about our church and they will gladly do their best to tell you about the church.
other places you could find answers are
lds.org
morman doctorine has about every belief and almost all the facts about the mormons in their.
another place to look is THE BOOK of MORMON(yes the keystone of the church)
or ask me and i will to my best to give you the most truthful answer i know.
thank you and plz dont tear apart religions most are there for a good reason and to help people.

ps crap master plz define cult
1. formal religious veneration : WORSHIP
2 : a system of religious beliefs and ritual; also : its body of adherents
3 : a religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious;
straight from meriam webster itself.
doesnt that make every religion a cult

No, because you would be catagorizing christianity as a cult too. Mormanism is a cult because they believe a man that watered down the bible and pretty much created his own. Its not even good at that, you can prove momans wrong with their own book.

Crap, I am utterly astounded at the hypocracy you have in every word.
Tell the truth:
The only correct interpretation of God is the one you personally subscribe to. All others, Catholics (who invented Christianity, by the way) Mormons, Jews, Moslems are wrong.
Intolerance of others is evil. It is not anti god (because there isn't one)
Your attitudes are the same as any racist or any bigot. All you are saying is that if you do not agree with me, then you are wrong.
Tell me, is that what your precious Jesus would do?
Your attitudes are not good Christian values.
By the way. Do not lecture me about god or Christianity. I am an old fart who has been attending Christian services and studying theology long before you were born.

Hey cop:
1. Easy on the caps. We all can hear you so shouting isn't required.
2. Try not to let this degenerate into personal attacks. We are arguing concepts and viewpoints here, not personal attributes.
3. Goat launcher obvoiusly drives a GTO, which, the last time I looked, was not 4 door anything.
and last i time i checked goat launcher has a pic of a 4 door civic with chrome rims??????chrome rims???the bling bling.......so sorry maybe im wrong i also checked his profile and it says a 4 door civic

Whats the difference in that, or putting my hand on the bible in court?
sorry for my harsh posts kris...no disrespect....all im saying is i go to school in orem...at uvsc.. even though i am from chicago..i noticed the day i moved here that things were different...and yea i agree with what you are saying about UTAH MORMONS...or people from utah..they do have a warped sense of the world...but to generalize the whole religon....
sorry for the caps.....

your right i probably should stand up for my church alil more, but making personal attacks on somebody for what they believe is not what where about the last time i checked. i do not seriously think he would beat a mormon down with a wiffle bat, im pretty sure goatlauncher was screwn around.
p.s. im dont belong to any car clubs.they are not the best use of my time. the only people whos opnion really means something to me are my parents, bishop, kara, and my own.

the cool thing that i like about the JWs i know is that they dont really go and try to convert you when they got out door knocking. what they do is try to study the bible with you and hear your point of views along with telling you some of there own. also anotherthing that really impresses me is that a lot of the older ones like over 25 will tell you exaactly where a scripture is found and what there interpertation is of it. just my 2 cents on jw
