The truth be told, NASCAR is all about winning. A big chunk of that I am sure is the paychecks that come along with it....but most of the guys in NASCAR(winston cup, busch series) are in it cause that is what they know and or are good at...in which they prove every saturday and sunday night(except right now cause it is the off season). Think about it...43 cars very close to having the same power and aerodynamics, all competing nose to tail....The winner proves(in most cases) that them and their team are better than the other 42 cars. Then you get the Ryan Newmans of the sport...win lots of races due to one superiority which is fuel consumption....he is definatly not one of the best drivers in Winston cup....just had his share or good decisions....but for the most part the wins are soley based on a drivers ability to DRIVE the car even if its a pile and doesn't handle. Thats what the point of NASCAR is...winning and being the best on the track.

ding ding :sunglasse Ryan Newman did have THE best team this year though. Penske power + smaller carb = good gas mileage. The point is to have fun, oval track guys grow up racing ovals. Road course guys race road courses and move on to a higher form of that racing. In the states the money is in nascar and it can thanks its high tv ratings, sponsors, car makes, drivers, etc...on the indy racing league and cart. If open wheel racing had no gone thru a split nascar would not be anywhere close to what it is today. Tony stewart, jeff gordon, jason leffler, jj yeley, ryan newman, all those guys would be racing open wheel. But thru the stupidity of the owners in those series, nascar is a hot money ticket and even the worst of drivers get a phat pay check. Just because someone thinks it takes no skill to drive an oval doesnt make it any less of a sport than drifting, F1, motogp, boat racing. They all take the same dedication, talent and all. Just look at what jeff gordon did in JPMs williams.

Ryan Newman IS one of the best drivers in nascar. You get wins anyway you can, wether it be fuel strategy or whatever you do what you have to to win. Newman drives his hard every race and often thats what hurts him in the long run.

I was a Ryan Newman fan since his Cup career began, but I've gotten tired of only seeing him win on fuel strategy. Harvick only won once this year at Indy, but he EARNED it.

i agree, ive been a longtime newman fan to. I can only think of acouple of races this year where he went out and tore everyone up with his talent alone. He beat off dale jr and jeff gordon with only two tires at texas, but after that it seemed all fuel mileage. But they did switch makes and were the best dodge all season.

He drove totally different this year than in his rookie season. This year he tried to stretch his fuel nearly every race while he truely drove hard his rookie season.

Another reason is because of the heritage.
It was origionally Stock Car Racing.
meaning companies would race cars taht they produced, as they produced them.
Unfortunately it is now ovverregulated and all the cars are tube frames with fiberglass bodies and carbureted big blocks which does not in any way represent the actual car that they claim to.
I wish it was like it used to be in the 60's and early 70's.
back when teams like Dodge and Plymouth came out with the "wing cars" and dominated the races because other companies didn't care about aerodynamics and they did.

You know....everyone in here has very valid points and Nascar is one of those sports that there are a million variables to every argument....fact of the matter is that if you have the skills to drive a winston cup car then you should get mad props cause anyone with a brain knows it wouldn't be easy and would still be a challenge every race even if you were good at it already.

And the picture of the girl grabbin her hoots makes typing a response very difficult.....good thinking.....

Good points all around and I can definiotely where some people would get bored with oval tracking, myself I love all forms of racing and have done many. I have worked for NASCAR as a crew member (Tire Specialist/Changer) and currently as an Official for the past 15 yrs. I always try to push them to add more road races. I started out when I was 14 as a navigator for my uncles WRC team in Spain but since moving to the USA in 81 NASCAR was easier to get into AND gave me a bigger paycheck so here I still am in it but I do any other road racing I can get when my schedule permits cause its in my blood! :worshippy

Why don't people ask 'what's the point of horses racing around an oval?" Racing is racing, and men will race anything that moves...from animals to lawnmowers. As for stock car racing, it doesn't matter what shape the track is, what matters is the skill of the drivers.

because it's too expensive to make track 500 miles in a strait line, so they decied to go in a circle and save a few hundred tons of asphalt. Plus its fun.
