You can do itt if you like, but your clearnace will change by about 3/4 of an inch and you total tire diamter will change. The tire diameter will affect the accurancy of your speedometer. Check this website to see what I mean.

the 40 or 50 in the tire size represents the percentage of the total rim size radius that is reflected over the sidewall of the tire. so on your 15 inch wheel, with a 205/50/15, the height of the sidewall of the tire is 50% of 7.5" so it does change the overall circumference of the wheel. yeah, it does change the accuracy of your speedometer, by like 1 or 2 mph, no big deal, as far as wheel clearance goes, unless your car is lowered some ungodly amount, it won't matter at all, or unless you have rims that are 18" or bigger, it doesn't matter. hope that helps, if not, email me, i work at Discount Tire Co. so i can get you more info if you want. peace.

ok...
205/55R15 is the factory size
205/40R17 is the same diameter as 205/55R15, your factory size
what you have currently, 205/50R15, is smaller in diameter than factory, barely
trust me, i own all three sizes one for winter, one for spring-sum-fall, and one set for the track. i really don't notice a change in anything speedo wise. i even had my local cop tag me going down the road at 55, to see how close it was.

the kuhmo supra 712 are good summer tires if there is snow on the ground or slush consistently, wait til spring to put the new wheels on if u live up north, if not go for it. from what i've heard they are not very good in rain or snow but excellent on dry pavement
