Hello my fellow Aurora drivers, rest in peace GMForums, it was sold and the site closed. Hopefully a number of you searched for a new site and are former members of the old site.

Questions, the current fog lamps are at 38 watts. The newer cool blue run at 50 watts. Has anyone installed these on their car, and electrical problems or over heating or lamps burn out sooner. Will installing a hotter lamp cause problems.

I would like to hear back

The 12 watts won't put you into an overload situation, but I would not go any higher.

I did this to a grand am GT and no overload problems ever, however I melted the socket and they fell out.

Now, for the GA there is no shortage of replacement round housings, but I am a little leary of the Aurora switch even though I'd like to do it myself.

I don't think an extra 12 watts melted it. How many watts were you really burning?

no more than 50, however it was a very small OEM bulb, not 38 watts. I'll check. Nope they were 27 watts the oems. 50 melted it.

I got a pair of Verox Xenon white 893 fog bulbs on ebay . The package says 37.5 watts. I've had no problems with them. Had em for a month now.
Unfortunately I can't find them on ebay now. The seller was "hotcarmods"

Yeah, usually about double the designed output will start destroying things. Same with headlight housings. You can get away with 80 watt, but 100 will melt things down.

Hi,
I need to buy replacement rear fog lamp bulbs for my 2001. I can't find any type number in the owner's manual or on the bulbs. The bulb envelopes are blistered and distorted, as though they got very very hot. Can someone tell me the type number for the OEM style replacement? I want to tell my wife precisely which bulbs to pick up.

These are the bulbs with the push-in glass wedge base, that look like the old 194 bulbs used in dashboards, but larger.

Osram/Sylvania's website has a great application guide. Just enter your cars info and it produces a complete bulb list for each car.

I looked a the Sylvania site. No rear fog lamp bulbs are listed for the Aurora. They do list the other exterior lights, including the front fog lights. No interior lamps are listed.

I'll measure the glass envelope and compare with their outline drawings.

What the heck is a rear fog lamp?

The only white light on the rear of a auto should be the back up lights.

That's what I was thinking. Replacement number for early back-up bulbs is 3057. These are wedge based.

The second generation Auroras have them. There are two red lamps, each about 12 inches inboard, set in the rear bumper.

Rear fog lights are found on cars in Europe. They are mounted low and are red in color. These properties allow the light to be visible in fog conditions. They are meant to be seen by the fellow behind you.

I can't think of any other US-made car with rear fog lights. I saw a car today with them on and from a distance there was no mistake it was an Aurora. The Grand Ams of about 2001 had what I think were called "rear cornering lights".

My wife bought Sylvania 912s. We'll try those.

In countries where cars travel on the right side of the road, there should only be one light on drivers side. They are clearance lights for passing in rain/fog. No wonder they're out of business.

Apparently NHTSA and DOT didn't object to having 2 of these lamps on the rear. The lamps are intended for visibility. In fog or rain the car behind need to see. One light, two, sixteen, what does it matter - rear red lights will be recognized as the rear of a vehicle.

out of business - perhaps using the second light made Olds unprofitable?

Producing a generally shitty line of vehicles did them in, rear fog lights are just a small piece of evidence.

I think most of us would agree that Olds was making the best cars they had in years when GM pulled the plug. So if it was $hitty cars, those were in the Cutlass-Achieva days, not circa 2000.

GM pulled the plug even though sales were rising, because they simply were not getting enough return on their investment.

Parts that break prematurely, the GM multi-function stalk, expensive dealer repair disasters, designing cars for successively older buyers - that is what is $hitty - don't you think?

Well said. There has been many a forum thread spent on GM politics. Your second statement is not a microcosm of Olds, it's a GM profile. My 97 is the first and last American designed vehicle I will ever buy. I thought buying used, but top level engineering, would prove to be viable. The car is nothing but non-stop maintenance. And I have not had any of the electrical problems others are having. My father bought a new Concorde this year, it needed immediate work as well as a loud "bang" that seems to be coming from the exhaust system about once a week. No one can isolate it. I'm not implying foreign designed is perfect, but the US made situation is really sad. Just surf around this site and compare the topics of discussion between foreign and domestic makers.
