Ok here we go! after finishing setting up my workshop and my white Fujimi MR2 this is my first documented build up project to go on this forum.
The subject of this this project is a Hasegawa Lancer EVO III, last week i cleaned up the body, there was a fair bit of mould lines and a few imperfections which was kinda weird for a Hasegawa kit, i have built a lot of their aircraft in the past and usually its pretty good, i guess im just getting too picky. that said I sprayed the body with Tamiya's Brilliant Orange.
The body is now ready to be polished after waiting 8 days for the paint to dry,I hate having to wait for paint to fully cure but i think this makes or breaks a project, iused to rush painting my bodies and end up screwing it up.
http://www.modelautosports.com/images/pics/evo3-03.jpg
I have also opened up all openings in the front bar since it was molded closed,im planing to replace the Hasegawa supplied mesh with some spare Tamiya mesh because it just look wrong and out of scale.

Just a shot of the rear
http://www.modelautosports.com/images/pics/evo3-01.jpg
The polishing will start tomorrow, the paint didint turn out too bad so i guess i wouldnt have to do too much. if all goes well i will get started on lowering the car, this thing rides like a bus plus the supplied wheel is a joke, it looks like a set of 14'inch wheels about as wide as a bicycle tyre.
Unsure what sort of wheels i want to put on this thing yet,ive got a nice set of Fujimi brembo brakes that i want to put on this baby, so i think a 5 spoke of somekind would be the pick.

Yeah my thoughts exactly, its very similar to Tamiya's Camel Yellow, but this colour is a lot darker and more on the side of orange.

Hi guys, It has been raining here in Sydney since last Saturday, perfect weather for modeling, well as long as your not spraying car bodies i guess. All is going well so far, no major probs.
I have started polishing and detailing the body, all window surrounds and panel lines have been blacked out. Since the window pillars were black i found that when i looked at the car there was too much black in the middle of the car and there was too much yellow everywhere else, so i decided to give the bottom lip of the front bar a full carbon fibre treatment.I have also added some finer Tamiya mesh in the front vents replacing the Hasegawa mesh which looked out of scale.
I also quikly dummied up a new intercooler with some styrene and bare metail foil to fill up the front mouth of the Evo, since standard kit intercooler was about a size of a toaster, this is not final yet i just wanted to see how it would look filling up the whole front end, i have seen some cars where you only see the core of the intercooler and not the end tanks. Do you think this looks right if i was to do the same on this evo?? im still to add the piping which you will be able to see in the on the left and right vents.
http://www.modelautosports.com/images/pics/evo3-04.jpg
The rear wing panel also recieved the carbon treatment, just to even things out.
http://www.modelautosports.com/images/pics/evo3-05.jpg
Thats it so far,im relatively pleased on that way its going, still a few polishing tweaks to do on the body, then i will get started on chassis and interior soon.

Unfortunately this model now discontinued, i picked this up a while back. its definately better than the Fujimi Evo III, my only gripe about this kit is the ridiculous ride height and pizza cutter wheels that came with it, otherwise its a very accurate kit, it must be a hasegawa and fujimi thing where the make sure that the kits they make ride as high as a bus.

Hi Guys, just a quick update, this project has stalled a bit, ive been so busy at work lately. I finally decided on the wheel selection, by memory these are Fujimi 18' Ruf wheels its perfect to show off those huge brembo brakes only thing i dont like about it is the profile, this is an older style Fujimi wheel which seems to have higher profile rubber.
I also lowered the chassis to a more respectable ride height. blacked out the panel lines and stated a bit of work in the interior providing there are no disasters it should be back on track again.
http://www.modelautosports.com/images/pics/evo3-06.jpg
Here is a close up shot of those huge Brembos, shame that fujimi dont make em anymore, looks like its time to cast some for future projects.

Its going relatively smooth so far, since this car has rally roots i decided to give certain parts of it the carbon treatment, and it gives contrast the main body colour
I used humbrol flat black enamel just to fill the lines then just let it sit for around five minutes, then i put a tiny frop of white spirit on a tissue then just rub over the panel line, this will just be enought to get rid of excess paint then i put some tamiya compound in my fingers and rub it in to the panel line, this is then followed by polishing it lightly with a clean soft cloth to remove all traces of paint. this works well for me but sometimes if the panel line is not deep enough i use the Gundam markers this is ok but i preffer the previous method best.
Lowering the chassis on this car simply involved cutting the struts the required lenght then was followed by drilling and pinning it back for extra support. then after that the lower suspension arm was slightly bent up to meet the lower hub carrier.
The Interior is coming along ok, im tinkering of layin some carbon on the dash just to tie in a bit more of the carbon theme, i will try to post some more update pics this weekend.

I somehow missed this car the first time it went through here. But damn, I sure am glad I caught it on it's way back! This looks great. I really like the work you did on all the simple, small details like the mesh in the grill and the carbon on the spoiler. Both nice details, and very well done, adding to such a beautiful clean model.

Thanks for your kind words Steve but i think this is far from a great build, im no where in your league, i still aspire to some day do the same amazing work that you and guys like pman,kunta,360spider and others. I have learnt a lot from you guys simply because of your attention to detail which i thing makes or breaks a project, thanks for the encouragement.
as far as updates i did some work on the interior this weekend and not really 100% happy with it i will post some pics when i get home later.
DISASTER struck :banghead: I lost the side mirrors, i turned the whole workshop upside down trying to find it and it was no where to be found, then to add insult to injury i droped the car and chipped the rear wing :banghead: so by this time i was just going insane thats when i decided to take a break and regroup for the next day.

What aspect of this model has turned you off?? or was that a typo? as far as seeing this in the shop, you wont because this model is now discontinued :( I agree with you the EVO III is the probably the best shape out of all Evo's its up there with the classic R32 GTR. the colour of this evo is actually Tamiya Brilliant Orange, its a bit darker than the Camel Yellow and Chrome Yellow.

Just another quick update, after the disastrous misadventure loosing the side mirrors, i regrouped today and painted the interior.
The interior was airbrushed with Tamiya German Gray and Flat black for seat and side door inserts, the centre console was a combination of Titanium Silver and Bronze. the steering wheel also got the carbon fibre treatment. all i need to do now is spray the whole interior with a satin clear coat and clean it up with a few extra details. I went pretty conservative with the interior to keep it in line with the whole theme of the car,i didnt want to ditract from the exterior.

http://www.modelautosports.com/images/pics/evo3-09.jpg
Ive also found new substitute mirrors to replace the ones that i misplaced, i think its out of a Tamiya Exiv.

what i was meant to say was that OTHER examples of this model have turned me off. This includes crap choice of colour and poor building skills. As far as seeing this model in a shop, it is quite likely. At some of the hobby shops here you find models that have been out of production for years :D

Just another quick update,I modified the muffler by trimming the twin exhaust pipe and replacing it with K&S aluminium tubing which was subsequently tapered in and painted flat black, the muffler was covered with bare metal foil.i wanted to make sure that this wasnt too big otherwise it would look out of scale, bigger isnt always better.

I gotta say: honestly, I am not a fan of orange cars, but man, WOW, it looks great!!! The carbon wing matches the model like a glove! This thread makes me want to go out and get the Hasegawa EvoIII!!! It seems to look more like a III than the Fujimi kit. (Has anyone else noticed that Fujimi usually seems to get the front lamps completely wrong, especially with the V and VI). Seeing Fujimi's rendition of the Sylvia S14 headlamps (both early and late) makes me want to hurl!
Do you got pics of the suspension setup? I'd like to actually see your mod for lowering it. Also, did you have to do any other surgery to fit fatter tires on? All my Hasegawa kits usually have suspension arms that are pretty close to the ultra-thin wheels.
And I agree with ppl's opinion on the Evo: although my fav is still the EvoIV, I think I still like the "understated" (but not overly drab) look of the III and IV.

The suspension on this thing was a real pain to set up, i didnt have much room to play with since the struts were in the way of the wider wheels. first step was to cut the shocks down by around 3mm, yes 3mm!!! this thing rode like a humvee, it was just plain ridiculous along with the stock bicycle wheels that it came with. i drilled the 2 shocks sections and pined it both with a lenght of K&S wire just to give it strenght this was done both front and rear, after doing so i noticed that the wheels were rubbing agains the shock struts, so i filed the shocks to clear the wheels, same goes for the rear trailing arms. unfotunately i cant take any closer pics of these mods because the wheels were so much wider than stock it kept poping off so in turn i glued and extended shaft to the front hub carrier. i will be working on a Hasegawa EVO II in the next few months and im sure that i will have to do the same mods to it since it shares the same chasis as this one.

Hey I know what you mean. I have the Evo 1 Rally car, setup for tarmac, and the thing looks like it can take the safari rally! To make things worse, Hasegawa included a set of super high profile slicks. Needless to say, it doesn't look it's going to win any rallies... Hence the interest in trying to lower it and give it wider tires. I looked at the bottom of my car, and it seems pretty complicated. I am too lazy..! :iceslolan Anyways, your post inspired me to track down an EvoIII, which I think I have almost got...!

Thanks Steve, I bought 2 of these sometime back, im converting one as a road car and the other as a rally car. eventually my aim is to build the whole EVOLUTION series,BTW what did the Lancer EVO1 look like?
I like Hasegawa kits its much better than Fujimi and is on par with Tamiya, however their interpretation of ride height and wheel sizes is sometimes questionable.
Below is a pic of the EVOII, it is an EVOII right? body looks the same main difference is the lower front lip, side skirts and rear bar extensions.

I meant cast the brakes in resin, casting your wheels is not difficult its just fiddly an time consuming, but once you set up the mould you can easily crank out dozens of them.

it is an EVOII right? body looks the same main difference is the lower front lip, side skirts and rear bar extensions.
I think that is actually a Lancer RS, also called RS-E or simply Evolution. The rear wing is bit different. The Evo II has a lower lip that the RS didn't.
Armin Schwaz (car numer 5) was leading the 1994 Monte Carlo Rally in one, until he went off on some snow that some assholes in the crowd had shovelled on the road.

I've uploaded a pic of an Evo 1 (or I guess just Lancer Evolution):

I built this model about 5 years ago, so the build sucks... I can upload a pic of the car if anyone is interested. Has these humongous "slicks" on them. Not what I'd call car setup for tarmac!! I am still trying to figure out where I saw an Evo1 road version from Hasegawa. I am pretty sure now that it's got a red car on the box...
