Exhaust system vs. Exhaust tip

I'm not a big racer/performance driver, but I have decided to give in and turn my Civic into a "rice burner" by making it loud for no apparent reason.

I don't know TOO MUCH about what I'm doing, but I've got a small idea. If I simply bought an exhaust tip, would that alone change the sound of my car or do I need an entirely new exhaust system?

If exhaust system is the answer, forget it.

But if a simple tip will change the sound, I'm looking for recommendations. I don't want a tip so loud that I can be heard a mile away. But I don't want a tip that doesn't do a damn thing to the sound of my car. Maybe one that is, on a scale from 1-10 based on volume, about a 5. Any suggestions?

Without removing or changing the muffler you will hear no difference in the sound of your exhaust system.

Then what exactly are exhaust tips for? Just looks?

Just looks. Think about it for awhile. How could a tip amplify sound?

I'm not so sure. A lot of cars in my area have the OE mufflers and big tips and the sound level is fvcking annoying.

you could cut out the resonator and the catalitic converter if you want that sound and replace them with pipe. you cant cut out the cat if you live in states where theres emmision controll, or you could just get a sport muffler and bolt in place, or even just clamp it

if you replace the muffiler with a sport one your car will be louder (a muffiler made for a larger diamiter exhaust system will be even louder) but there will be little performance gain

By chaning the tip the sound can be changed a bit. It will no be able to make your car to sound "sporty" it can however introduce annoying resonanses. This is due to the changes in length and that the silencing effect of the tips differ.

If you want to change the sound of the car I recommend that you replace the first muffler with a tube and the last one with a full flow/open type of muffler. For that I recommend that you use a tip with a silencing effect, especially if the engine is NA.

You can buy tips at many shops here which alter the exhaust note, usualy in a very annoying way. I should imagine they are just as easily avliable in the US as they are here.
But there is zero performance gain.

If you want to change the sound of your car, buy a REALLY big muffler, if there is a supressor inside, take it out. i saw a muffler on the web, called the bomb, claiming that if you removed the supressor inside you got a 5-10hp gain. muffler tips are mostly for looks but a small one can make put more restriction on your exaust system therefore slightly reducing performance.

The cheapest way to change the sound would be to cut off the muffler.
