Alright, this guy i've known since the day i was born(one of my dads friends), is a mechanic, he says the 4th generation camaros(93+) are better automatic transmission cause they shift faster than any human can, but with a manual you would be able to get a better start, any thoughts on this? input please

Well, if you get a higher stall converter and a shift kit in your auto tranny you can launch just as high as a manual and shift harder, faster, and more consistent each time than somebody with a Manual.

Notice how all the fast guys who run the 1/4 use a automatic transmission of some sort?

Manuals are fun, they work great for road racing and make driving fairly fun. But automatics are what get the job done in the 1/4.

yes he is 100% right

Drag Strip advantage= Automatic
Auto X/Road Course advantage= Manual

with an auto you never have missed shifts, you can control what rpm what shift will upshift at every single time. You can tell computer under WOT to shift 1-2 at say 6300rpm, 2-3 at 6100rpm, 3-4 at 5900rpm etc.... It is far more consistent.

autos will be more consistance through the 1/4 thats why a majority use them.

you know how to drive stick and drive it good you can edge out the auto. When it comes to autos/manuals porsche manual 11.6 auto 11.8 through the 1/4  yeah 2 tenths different but its still a touch quicker.

I used that car cause I would believe a porsche has a awesome auto

if you dump enough money into a manual you can get it faster, basically, no matter what.

the guys that drive the funny cars on speed channel that do 5 sec 1/4mi are all manuals.

but those shift kits cost serious, serious $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. they spend $25000+ just to get it .2 sec faster.

within reason of cost, autos are faster for the drag strip.

Uhhhh, Sorry bud. They use automatics, there is no clutch pedal in the car. What they use is a trans-brake to hold the car in place while it revs up, then they press a button when its go time and it launches like a bat out of hell. Basically the same effect of dumping the clutch.

The transmission they use is called a direct drive, only 1 speed and reverse. If I recall right its a 1:1 ratio. Its got mad clutches in it that last for about 1-2 maybe 3 races if they're lucky. The transmission is still slipping its clutches all the way up to the last 300ft of the track, that's when all 8000hp is actually being put down to the track.

As for car's that are faster with a stick than with a manual stock for stock. This is mostly true, but if you spend sometime recalibrating the autotranny and maybe regear the rearend. It'll be faster or at least more consistant than the manual 9 times out of 10.

they don't have a clutch, but they are definately manuals. i seen them shifting in the cockpit of the car during the race. i can find videos of them if you want and post them here

edit: i heard of direct drive, but i seen one guy shifting all the way down for a 5.8 sec pass. i'll try to find the video... maybe im thinking of something else

What car class are you watching?

The Top Fuel and Funny Car's run an automatic transmission. I've got a friend who pit crews for a Top Fuel team, and they all use autos. Only way they can remain consistent.

What you might be seeing is a Lenco transmission or something like that... basically 5 levers, each for a seperate gear. When you go you just start pushing the levers forward one at a time for each time you want to shift... kinda complicated but it cuts out the factor of 'misshifting' I guess.
