Have anyone found about the new GTO? It comes with a 5.7 liter V8 rear wheel drive. It sopposed to do 0-60 in 5.3 seconds. They say there competetor would be a SVT Cobra. Would you guys think that is true or are they hoping for too much?

well it runs the 1/4 in 13.6 stats from moter trend. meaning its similar to a trans am ram air. or camaro ss. but it can't compete with the cobra. but the upgraded version is suppose to come out about a year after with a Z06 motor in it and that should run good with the cobra.
the car is basically a corvette with a diff body. the engines even look identical.

It won't even come close to an '03 Cobra. One magazine had the car in the freaking 14's for chrissakes.

Oh wait...it's an LS1...I forgot...NOTHING WILL BEAT IT...:p

The next Mustang Cobra is going to be in the 500+hp range (2006my most likely so about one year after the ultimate GTO debuts) so unless that GTO gets a SERIOUS power infusion don't count on running down any of the new Cobra's. But, with Lutz at the helm of the General who knows what could happen in the future???....the man does not like to lose.

If the Mach-1 makes a return in the new Mustang body style I would say that is most likely the closer car in power and speed to the Judge, or whatever the nastier GTO will be called. But, I am just guessing here.

We do already know that the next Mustang GT gets a pretty significant hp infusion (Around 320hp at the crank, around where the current Mach-1 is with a bit better torque more than current Mach more than likely as the new GT uses a SOHC 3-valve engine) and it is at least "LS1 F-Body fast" according to Ford. So, the standard GTO isn't going to be quite as fast as any V-8 Mustang starting in 05 unless something changes in the GTO.

But, honestly, the GTO is going after a different niche in the marketplace than the Mustang is. And, I don't think anyone really expects the new Goat to be as fast as a V-8 Mustang. Just close.

FYI, in the 2005 MY, the first year of the new Mustang, it looks like there will be no Cobra as the new snake will debut about a year later. I have heard nothing about the return of the Mach-1 on the new chassis yet.

I have seen that the GTO's do 14 flat and 14.3 from various magazines.... they seem pretty slow, they also said they didn't handle that great, and the interior was shitty quality. But it was styled nice and has good front seats LMAO, waiste of car IMHO, Corvette has much better performance, styling, acceleration, braking, and it is not really that much more. If I wanted a new 4 seat performance car I wouldn't be looking at GM anyway. Can anyone say EVOLUTION lol.

its like the new Nissan Altima 3.5 and the Nissan Maxima, sure they are different but they both use same engine, both FWD, 4 door sedans, its kinda dumb. Maybe they shoulda made the maxima RWD like the Infiniti G35 and they woulda had something killer for the Nissan lineup, just me 2 cents though, it will never happen lol.

Get ready they are talking about using an LS6 in all of GM's models including the GTO since the vette will have the LS2 in the coupes and an LS7 in the Z06.

went to the pontiac site and looked at the GTO 0-60 is 5.3 with a manual, said to have more power on the lower end and will be as quick or a touch quicker then the f-body's.

i too just read an article in motor trend.... actually it's their 2005 model! 500hp, 0-60 in 3.7. like $115000..... they are trying to compete with the porsche tt's and ferraris and lambos.

the 2005's will eat cobras for lunch.

First and foremost, Motor Trend is to automotive journalism what KFC is to chicken. Second off, the new GTO isn't aimed at Mustang, never needed to be. The GTO is designed to be a powerful sport coupe with decent handling and plenty of comfort for long distance traveling.

How was that 14 accomplished? Was there a lot of wheelspin or did it just hunker down and bog a little? Did it wash from side to side? And, folks, we know that LS1 isn't in top tune. Ten'll get you twenty that remapping the computer for more top end will slip that thing into a 13.9.

The new GTO is doing its job admirably. It's getting people back into Pontiac dealerships with an all-new (to these shores) product after years of re-hashed Gran Prixs, Grand Ams, and Sunfires. This is the first true step in Bob Lutz's plan to give Pontiac back to the enthusiasts.

And I'll make another bet. As easy as it is to tune the LS1, we'll see a Judge edition in two years time.

SR20DET I'd like to know what magazines you read, I have yet to hear anyone bitch about the interior looking like crap. All I ever hear from reviewers is it looks better then anything Pontiac has ever made.

As for speed, wait til the damn thing comes out, and give it a few months, then you'll know what it runs. Not many people were clicking off 12's in the supercharged Cobra the first time it came out, even though it can do it.

Car and Driver was only able to click off a 14 flat with the beast. It most likey wasn't even broken in yet. So I'm guessing that it'll run mid to high 13's.. especially since it is rated at 350hp

Well, actually, I read absolutely none of that in Motor Trend. It came partially from Brad's Mustang Site and also from a press releases and interviews by FoMoCO....specifically John Coletti..head of SVT. And as far as something eating the Cobra's lunch I am not exactly certain to what car you are referring, but it sounds like you read about the new GT supercar.

If you are talking about the 2005 Ford GT then obviously it eats any Mustangs lunch. However, I am not sure if you think I mixed up the GT and the next Cobra or what...but I meant what I said as the next Cobra is getting at least 500hp.......SVT has been letting that number get thrown around in press realeases for a loooong time now.

The new GT is getting a hp infusion already as well to put more distance between it and the 2006 Mustang Cobra/2005 Lightning p-up which are both going to have 500+hp. Right now the 540hp seems to be the number for the Lightning according to all the leaks. Right now there are no "close" numbers coming out for the 06 Cobra but supposedly it will keep a hp edge over the Lightning. This seems logical as it has always been this way since the Lightnings inception.

As with any LS1, it'll take several thousand miles, maybe up to 10-15k to be fully broken in and pulling it's best times down the track. I've not heard of one person that didn't feel like their LS1 pulled harder after several grand on the odometer. I need a new GTO for my grocery getter :)

Yeah this power thing is starting to get a little out of hand, but its great isn't it? 500 hp being thrown everywhere from trucks to cars, at least the term "American Muscle" got its meaning back after 70's-80's

I Dont Know What The New Gto Has In It. I Just Know That Everytime Ive Ever Raced A Svt Cobra Ive Beaten It By At Least A Full Car Length. Now I Have A 67' Nova With A 350 Thats Putting Close To 500 Horse To The Ground. Ive Got 15" Tires In The Rear And 7" Tires In Front. My Fastest Time In The 1/8 (only Because We Dont Have A 1/4 Where I Live) Was 6.3 @ 133 Mph And That Was With Some Tire Spin At The Start. Now Just Think For A Sec 500 Horse In A Car That Weighs About As Much As A Honda Civic Hatch. Svt Aint Got Shite On Me!

11-21-2003, 09:23 PM
6.3 thats pretty damn fast, if you're running that in the 1/8 shouldn't you be beating them by more than just a car length? I don't know what thats around in the 1/4 mile but that seems to me like you're in the 10-11 second range??

Nova's seem to be sprouting up here a bit lately looks like you got some competition Redneck. Finish that damn Nova already :smokin:

i sorta agree with you. they shouldn't make the maxima RWD though. they should do away with the altima. if you want a 4 door car with a 2.5 cvvtc 4 banger get the se-r spec-v it's a lot lighter than a 2.5 sl altima and has the option for the lava seats and is 6 speed. if you want a FWD car with the VQ35 get the maxima/I35. it's got 15 more hp, is 6 speed and only weighs 45 lbs more than an altima and i like the looks of a maxima better anyway, but that's just my opinion. you want a RWD VQ35 get the G35/350z. they should do away with the altima and start making an AWD turbo SE-R. nissan needs a 4 door/AWD sport car to compete with the EVO 8 and STI. unless you wanna wait til the 2007 V35 skyline comes out

and so to stay on topic, i'd get the GTO over the cobra cuz i don't really like fords. but i'd rather have a vette over either of the others

maxima = great car
altima = good car, cheaper. that's there selling point, kinda like the maxima but cheaper --- even thought the altima drives NOTHING like a maxima.... but there are so many altimas on the road, they will never get rid of it. they are probably nissan's best-seller.

i like the fwd in maxima, but that might be because i live in cleveland and we are hit with snow from time to time. the suspension is still great, i don't think it needs rwd.

only sports cars should have rwd.

what i wanna know is why nissan doesn't bring back the 240sx. that's like how the altima is compared to the maxima.... 240's like the z (even thought it isn't)... only cheaper.

wonder why they took it out in 1998. a cheap awesome sports car. right when all the f&f stuff took off..... hmmmmmmmmmmmm. im sure they'll come back with i again. what a great car. i would probably buy one if they would look anything like the jap spec s15 or s16. or it would just hype me up so much to get a s13 and mod it up the ass, just so i can burn some new 240's :evillol:
