Teens burned
in huffing explosion

HARTFORD - Three Hartford and Hustisford area teenage girls are recovering from first- and second-degree burns received after an explosion occurred inside their car Saturday afternoon.
Hartford Police Chief Thomas Jones said the girls, ages 17, 16 and 14, admitted to purchasing several cans of air freshener, going to Independence Park and huffing - using the aerosol in the cans as inhalants - inside the car for approximately an hour. The 16-year-old is from the Hustisford area and the other two girls are from the city of Hartford.

After an hour had passed, a lighter was lit, which ignited the combustible aerosol material inside the car.

"There was an explosion in the passenger compartment of the vehicle, and apparently they felt a burning sensation on their faces and tried to cool it by using water from a creek at Independence Park," Jones said.

The girls then ran to South Wilson Avenue where they stopped a motorist at about 4:45 p.m. and were taken to Aurora Medical Center. They have since been released.

Jones said it was reported to them that the girls received first- and second-degree burns on their faces, chest and arms.

Despite the injuries, Jones said "these are extremely fortunate ladies," because considering the damage to the car, their injuries could have been much worse.

Jones said the officer on the scene described the passenger side window of the car as being shattered, with glass scattered as far as 20 feet away. The driver’s side and passenger’s side doors and the trunk were buckled out, and there were a number of areas, including the passenger side visor, which were burned.

Scott MacFarlan, Hartford’s school liaison police officer, called the case isolated. He said he hasn’t seen this type of drug abuse in either the middle school or high school.

Huffers are stoopid.

I knew some people in high-school that were into that, using paint, freon, scotch-guard, whatever.

A quick way to get a mushy brain.

To bad it didn't kill them or sear off their genitalia so they can't reproduce.

I am surpised that they survived the explosion. That was dumb thing that they did. Never sniff and light inhalants.

 Kids these days. Why can't they stick to tried and true drugs of yesteryear? Goey, weed, pingers etc. :D

Yeah I know, right? Granted, I did some less than savory stuff during high school, but I NEVER got near anything used to pretty up the air after you've "done the damage." I did know kids that DID do that inhalant crap though. Needless to say, most of 'em aren't exactly "all there" anymore.

For cryin' out loud, if you're gonna stew the old brain, at least do something WORTH IT, like Acid :evillol:

that reminds me of when I sat around one afternoon at my friends apartment doing nitrous ballons when after every 30sec laughing fit I felt dumber and dumber. However I don't think I ever got dumb enought to spray aerosol into a car then decide to spark my lighter.

(I have torched a car before, but not with my dumb-ass in it)

Oh, what state is that in? Is that Hartford, CT? 'Cause that wouldn't surprise me
