CAI or Hood Scope

Ok Guys, the whole theory of a CAI (cold air intake) is to suck cool air from outside the engine compartment, this in return provides air richer in oxygen do to its density eventually leading to more combustion and more overall performance. What if we were to add a hood scope which would literally force feed cool air directly to our high intake filter? Wouldn’t this be a better option than a CAI, at least we wouldn’t have to worry about sucking up water while driving through deep puddles. I still don’t know how I would keep the rain from entering through the scope. . .:confused:

well you could add a hood scoop, but the scoop would be on the driver side of the car if you wanted *some* cold air to go to the filter. plus the filter would be also getting some underhood heat air too, just cause theres a flow of air going to the filter, doesnt mean it cant suck up air from its surroundings as well. id go with the CAI :D

The cold air only gives a slight benifit. The length of the pipe causes a resonance that gives more power. I don't now exactly how this works but that's how I understand it.

Forcing air into the filter will not really make much difference. The big champer at the top of your motor above the injectors (depending on the year) is a plenum and it's job it to slow down the air so that each cylinder can feed off a nice calm air source. Unless you significatly pressurize that plenum somehow it won't make much difference.

Adding a hood scoop wouldn't really "force" air into the intake as the sucking of your engine is more powerful than the air entering the scoop. Only at high speeds would you have a chance to "force" air into the filter. I also heard this big explanation about the resonance that the length of the pipe gives. The scoop would give the filter a place to suck cooler air from, but if you've ever ran your car hard with the CAI extention and felt the pipes; they're pretty cold for being next to a hot engine. I really don't see how a scoop would further help this. What I did to expose the filter to cooler air is cut open the OEM foglight location and put mesh to cover the hole against big objects that may happen to fly in it's direction.
