mr2 layout

hello everyone. I'm interesting in buying a MR2 in the near future after I sell my current car. I was reading some of the postings and I read that the MR2 engine is transversly mounted somewhat like a front drive car. I was wondering about the transaxle. In front drive cars they tend to wear out rather quickly especially when driven hard. I was also watching a import drag comp. on TV and they said the shafts were weak and usually the first to go. I just would like to know more about powertrain setup. Thanks. :1zhelp:

The OEM tranny in a turbo MR2 has bee nshown to handle over 600 RWHP.

The axles become and issue over 300RWHP depening on how you launch.

over 300hp there are fixes available, for even higher power new axles are also available.

as with any CV jointed car you can decrease failure buy using either safety wire, or nylon tie-wraps to keep the boots from expanding, which allows the grease to move away from the CV

I had a CV Joint explode on me, which is that part of the axles assembly that fails on most MR2s that drag race.

I did not opt for a whole upgraded axle.
I bought beefed up CV Joint piece from ATS Racing:

The CV innards they offer are thicker and made of chromoly steel.
I have 11 launches on them so far ... no problems. :)

Ok thats good stuff to know. I guess that won't hinder me from buying a MR2 in the future then. I'm really excited to explore the potentials of this car. Thanks again for the insight.
