A Threat To More Than Just Hummers

An extremist activist organization is elevating their sense of the absurd to new heights by likening Hummers to cigarettes. The group also plans protests this weekend against Hummer dealers in at least ten cities. Furthermore, the group is seeking to ban all advertising for the vehicles, claiming they are “a huge threat to children.” Although the claim that Hummers are similar to putting cigarette vending machines in schools is downright bizarre, it does reveal some important aspects of the group’s motivation and goals. 1) The organization is not trying to influence consumer buying decisions. Instead they are trying to restrict consumer choice. 2) The group is opposed to the basic American value of freedom of speech. Instead, they seek to impose censorship. 3) Even though they are not directly endorsing violence, the group is providing a possible pretext for other extremists to commit violence against Hummers and, even Hummer owners or dealers. The FBI has declared that a violent group which has torched Hummers, car dealerships and other buildings to be a domestic terrorist organization. It is time for all responsible people, regardless of whether they prefer Hummers or bicycles, to stand against those who seek to condone or commit violence. The issue is not whether or not you love or hate Hummers, the issue is whether public policy will be made through democratic processes or through violence and intimidation.
