Timing Light! Where it the check connector?

It tells me to short out the check connector, but I can not find it. The Haynes tells me to look on the back of my engine compartment and it will be on the left my EVCI tells me on the right. I am looking for a yellow rubber cap. I can not find this can anyone help me.
88 DX 1.5
I am just trying to set my timing.

The connector should be under-hood left rear(d/s) or near the p/s footarea.

In my 91, that connector is under the dash on the passenger side, all the way over near the door - this is what the picture from the factory service manual jackassi posted shows

however, a quick look in chilton says that for 88-89 models, it is in the engine compartment where you are looking, so it's not the same

the text is

"Remove the YEL rubber cap from the ignition timing adjusting connector. This is located at the rear of the engine compartment on 1988-89 models"

...

"Connect a jumper between the BRN and GRN/WHT terminals of the connector"

For what it's worth, my connector had no cap and i identified it by the wire color as given above. It was bundled with some other wires as well.

your car is an 88, it won't be inside the passenger compartment!

my car, the car i posted a pic of, is an 88 dx. it should be right where i circled. the sticker on the bottom of the hood (if stock hood still) would tell you where it is definetly.

Well I looked at the pick and I do have something over there where the pic is marked, but how do I know it is the right thing. The VECI does say it is on the right, but it is not clearly marked?

its like the only thing over there. i lost the yellow cap for mine, maybe that happened to yours too..

Its the only connector in that area with nothing plugged into it - should be easy to find!

Alright that is probably it.
Now when I am shining the timing light I will be shining it down at the crankshaft pully? trying to get the timing marks to line up?

Well Jackassi this is the final step I got my head back on and now I just have to get the timing back. I do get a little white smoke, but I hope that it will stop after the engine has been driven for a little while. I am adjusting the timing because I have no power at acceleration.

Whatever happened with the head problem? Did you end up replacing the head bolts?

If it doesn't stop smoking within 500 miles, I'd do another compression test & some other inspecting.

The head bolt are not the replacing kind. The only place I could find to buy them wanted to charge me $10 a bolt. I just re tapped and die the head. I had the head checked and they said it is good. I am not having the same problem now, so I just htink that my timing is off, since I took the ditributor cap off with out marking it.

If the timing is off can it leave black deposits on your spark plugs?
