I am a network administrator/engineer. Don`t get into this field kids. It is ugly right now. And definitely don`t believe the Microsoft Certified yadda yadda $75K/year ads for beginners. You will be fortunate if you can find a job. Luckily I`ve been in this before the big tidal wave of newbies (not an insult) came in.

My occupation is in my profile.

I am another one in a position that sucks but what can you do when the job market sucks worse than the job you have?

I have an engineering degree, and used to work in the CAD/CAM/CAE software development and sales field, but somehow, I ended up being a full time translator for an anime magazine called Newtype USA, which is quite enjoyable, and I like the job actually.

Anyway, before it's too late, become familiar with the national survey of income in your country, and how much you can be making in a particular field. If you haven't decided what to do, (which I'm sure you haven't at that young), and if you have several options to choose from, it's better choosing the well paid job, and go to college of that field to achieve the goal.

What you need to ask yourself is, "What would I do if I had a million dollars?" Then you'll find your career. :iceslolan

I'm a database admin. I agree with Hawk, stay away from IT. Only reason I'm still around is there were a bunch of guys ahead of me that made much more money. Now they make $0. We're going to be like lawyers of the 90's. "Oh great, that's what the world needs, more IT guys!"

My dads best friend owns an industrial plumbing company, he makes a lot of money. For example, he has a 2002 Porsche 911 Targa, Hummer H2, 2 new Harley's, a speed boat, and a couple of houses and condos in Alberta.
Right now Im still in school, but after I might go work for him and take over when he retires .

Similar to me. I work as a Data Communications Engineer and Project Manager for the state run Rail Corporation. The IT area is not what it is cracked up to be after Y2K. These days most MCSE's only get a job by agreeing to get everyone else coffee during the day. Similar things apply to the Cisco certifications. Anyway my pays not bad ($70k) and the work is fairly enjoyable - though at times it stresses me out which is why I build model cars to relax me again.

 Norm is so cool! I love of the guys on TOH. That'd be a great job. Being modelers, I think we appreciate more things being built by hand, like the guys on TOH and similar professions.

I feel for you there Hawk.
I'm a Sales manager and Senior consultant for a digital video reseller in the UK. We supply Video over IP, broadcast / film equipment and high end 3D software solutions.

The IT industry has taken a kick in the nuts of late with big names like HP/Compaq dropping people by the day. It all has a knock on effect to most Computer based industries so stay clear for now.

Plus sides of my job are working with some of the UK's top FX houses on big films (Thunderbirds, Harry Potter, king Arthur etc) and UK Games developers with software like Maya, lightwave etc.
I also get to work from home, so I can take the odd 10min break to work on my models.

Like most people here will agree you'll almost never end up doing what you first wanted to do in collage / school. I started off wanting to join the Royal Air Force which I did for 6 years. But the pay sucked big time!!

Best advise is find something specialised that there's a market for but not a lot of people do. Plus make sure its something you enjoy.

I'm only a student right now, but I just go around making little bits of money everyonce in a while. I help out a little bit at my parents store, I used to deliver papers, but now I have too much homework. I also just keep all the money that my parents give me for Christmas and stuff, and just try to use a little for models, but of course, that never happens.

Well, that pretty much sums up my life...

Senior PEO for Fluke Electronics. Those words are too fancy for me. A lot of you know them as the high priced yellow multimeters/calibrators. I get to hack up internal resistors with high powered lasers. Not a bad job at all.....after 6 years I still like it.

I work in IT and I hate myself for it. -going to school, getting $23,000 worth of loans, and coming out to work in a f_#king call center where Im disrespected just to get experience (I help ppl with their internet connection.. oooh.), while I lose all the skills I learned in the meantime. everything the others said about the computer field is true. also, everything you study and learn is pretty much useless 3 years later.

Don't do it or you'll wind up looking at bridges not as a road to drive down, but as a means to an end.

I hate my job. /rant
