Hello, I have a 98 SE 5spd with 81k miles. My problem started on the way home from school. I was driving and it started driving rough and then it jerked, then engine check light came on. I got home and it wouldnt turn back on after I turned it off, it cranked fine and the rpms would bounce up very little but it just wouldnt go. I checked the code and it was Cylinder 3 Misfire. I coudnt get any new codes because it wouldnt turn on, so swapping the ignition coils wouldnt do much. I checked the resistance on my crankshaft sensors and they were fine. I put in NGK Coppers and still nothing. Then I went on to fuel. I got a can of starting fluid and sprayed it up at the filter while my friend cranked and it started right up. The car always starts up on its own now but its rough. It was pretty smooth when I let it idle for about 5min but I got code Cylinder 1 Misfire. I reset it and took a ride around the block, was smooth for a little while, but then the it was jerky and rough and the engine didnt sound right at all. I checked the code when I got back and it was Multiple Cylinder Misfire. I was suggested to change the fuel filter and it didnt help any at all. I got the Multiple Cylinder Misfire code again and the rpms were constant at 900, the car wasnt warmed up yet. The engine does not sound right at all and the exhaust sounds horrible, it makes a put, put noise. Im not sure what the problem can be now. Im still thinking its somthing with the fuel system since the starter fuild got the car started. I dont think all the injectors would just go bad so that leaves the fuel pump. My friend said that it might be my cat might be clogged since the exhaust was making a putting noise. Would it be ok if I drive the car to the repair shop or can I cause some really bad damage to my engine? I would still like to fix it myself but If I cant, I have to take it somewhere. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I think the problem might be clogged fuel injectors. I checked by unplugged the coil packs one at a time to see if I get a difference with idle. Cylinders 4, 3 and 5 do not make any difference so those are the cylinders misfiring. Unplugging any of the other ones causes the car to almost stall. I swapped the injector from 4 to 2 and then unplugging coil pack 2 made no differnce. I changed the injector to 6 to make sure that was the problem. When I tried unplugging any of the front cylinders, 2, 4 and 6 would make a difference. The car seemed to shake less and the exhaust sounded a bit smoother. Im guessing the injector unclogged itself. I ccouldnt switch the rear injectors because the upper intake manifold, I dont know if its going to be easy for me to remove. I poured some Chevron injecter cleaner in to see if that might unclog the other 2 injectors. Today I took the car to the shop which is about 2-3 miles away, half way there the car started drivng very smooth, like there was nothing wrong. When I made it to the shop i checked the exhuast and it was not making a putting noise anymore, it was smooth and nothing was shaking. I drove around for about 10min and it was perfect but then it started to get a little shaky again. I checked the exhaust and it started making the putting noise again. When I got home I cleared the ecu and took it for a drive, I got the Multiple Cylinder Misfire code again. I turned the car off and went inside for about 45min. I went to start the car, which is still a little warm and it would not start, cranked fine but it just would go. I sprayed some starter fluid in the bottom part of the airbox and started cranking again. It turned on but it was shaking pretty bad like it was before. I dont think the 2 clogged injectors would prevent my car to not start at all. Anyone have any ideas, I cant take it to the shop tomarrow and I need to fix this asap. Thanks.

same thing happened to me about two weeks ago, just posted in another thread.
it's probably one of your fuel injectors, i had a dead one. they are expensive from nissan.... $129.

I think mine where just clogged. I took it for a drive today and after a little while it stopped misfiring and it was smooth again. I kept driving for about an hour and it was fine. I think it just need some of the injecter cleaner to get through there.

The same thing is happening to me now. I poured some of that injector cleaner in but, it didn't work. This morning when I started my car it drove perfectly. Then after I got out of class the car was misfiring. The exhaust was also making a put-put sound. I don't want to take it to the dealership until I know that I can't fix it myself. Any suggestions?

I think the Chevron Techron Cleaner I put it might have helped to unclog the injectors, if thats what the problem is. It randomly runs perfect otherwise it just misfires. Sometimes after driving while it misfires it just goes away and it drives perfect. I might try BG 44k Fuel System Cleaner, a lot of people say it works great and they can notice a difference. It expensive at $18-22 but I hear its worth it. You can find it at most dealerships, Ill try to pick up a bottle tomarrow and see if it helps any. Caracicatriz, did your Check Engine Light come on? If so did you check the code?

The light is on but the codes just say oxygen sensor. That will be the next thing that i get. I don't think the problem has anything to do with that, but maybe I'm wrong.

Misfire problem on Maxima 97-00 models could be a bad ignition coil. I replaced one on mine after receiving a misfire code on cylinder #2. It runs fire now with another 15k miles already.
