I need help trying to figure out what happen. I was driveing the car Sat and happend to look back to see lots of smoke coming from the exhaust. I have 1990 talon tsi awd, none the oil lines are leaking. So I gave it a tune up thinking that there was too much oil in the motor, the oil was very thin when it drained so I put 20-50 and lucas and a set of plugs. Thought that would atleast bring down a notch. Is it possible that my turbo is bad.

run a compression check wet and dry to see if you still have rings.

well first off does the car still have power? like when you drive it does it feel the same or is there a loss in power... if no loss of power, then you rings should be fine, i would check the shaft in your turbo to see how much play is in it...if there is some play that could be your problem with the oil leaking around the shaft and you will no right away when when you take off the O2 housing and see oil or not...if not i am not sure what it could be then, hope that helps!!

Yes, the car does still have power, except at one point it did not want to stay on it cut off twice. but after that the only problem I have had is to much smoke. Like when I stop at a light I feel like someone threw a smoke bomb under the car.

Based on that last description I would bet either turbo, or valve seals. What year? HOw many miles? what turbo?
You can chekc turbo shaft play by simply pulling the intake pipe off. Check side to side wobble, and thrust play, or how much the wheel move "in and out." You should always feel a little bit. But if its a lot, or it clunks back and forth, etc, its most likely bad ;)

It is a 1990 tsi awd just hit 110,000 miles. When I bought the car the timing belt was off it so we put it back on and noticed that the piston on the driver side end was completly melted rings and all. So I ordered a new piston but it was too small it needed to be .20 over. Put it back together the head on the car looked to be new or rebuilt. I put maybe 1700 miles on when it started smoke. Considering I bought the car for $35 and not ever seeing or meeting the previous owner to find out what was actually done to the motor.

the piston was melted??? :eek7:
so did you order a piston that was .020 over? or did you put the smaller one in, if thats the case then you have blow by and your getting oil into the combustion chamber and forcing it out your exhaust... hows your oil level on the dip stick, does it stay steady or do you have to add some every now and then???
i would suggest doin a compression test on that cylinder, better yet do all of them just incase... well let us know what you figure out!

I have the same problem....at first my head gasket was leaking and it was smoking bad and shut off a couple times when i was idling. so i took it to get the head gasket put on...that fixed the shutting off part but it still smokes. i took it back and they said i had bad pistons, they said if it dosnt hurt the way it drives then dont worry bout it

Where did you find a tsi for $35? All the luck in the world.

I went to an auto auction, it was sitting next to a red 97 gsx. The gsx sold for 4500. Nobody even looked twice at the faded black talon next to it so I walked around it only to notice apexi exhaust i looked under it and saw the 3inch piping. So i said to myself what idiot let this thing go. Wehn can around to bid the popped the hood and the timing belt was off so everyone who looked at it didn't want to deal with it. so the starting bid was $ 35 and that is what i paid for it.
Ordered new pistons and rings hopefully this will fix the problem

thats tight dude
congrats on ur new car
daaim i wish i could find a GSX for 4500, specailly a 97
its off to the auctions
but in regards to the smoke, what does it smell like is it sweet like antifreeze sweet ? because i read somewhere in this forum that another member had the same kinda trouble and i think it was that he had a rad hose leak and the antifreeze was burning. Or does it smell like oil is burning ?
