Check Engine Codes Specifics

Sorry if I missed this information posted elsewhere, but I did try to find it. I am looking for specific instructions on how to read the check engine codes in my 1997 Chevy Cheyenne, C/K pickup. 1500 series, 5.0L, automatic.

Can they be read without using a computer? If so, can someone tell me how. I was told the ignition switch can be flipped a certain number of times to get the codes to be displayed. Is this correct?

Any help is appreciated.

Your system is OBDII specific. That means that a scanner of some kind is necessary to read and specify the codes involved. You will not need a GM dedicated unit to read the codes, just one dedicated to OBDII programming. A GM scanner will assist you in other functions regarding the problem, but knowing which code is set will not require a GM scanner. Ray

Thanks for the clarification on this...

my 1994 truck can be tested without a scanner, but I think it might not be a OBDII. Probably the earlier OBD, but in mine you can jump two of the connector pins and it will give you trouble codes.

I believe that OBDI when to OBDII in 95 or 96. I have a 97 and it is OBDII you can get a reader and save lots of time
