tinting tail lights

sounds wierd to me but i heard on some site that someone was going to tint thier taillights and i was wondering if it would work or would the film come of with the weather? if it would work i think it would be kinda cool cause it would dim the colors of the taillights and make them more suttle. ( the colors during the day that is, not the actual lighting up of the lights with the breaks)

I doubt they were using actual window tint. They probably used a product like "VHT Night Shades." It is a transparent black tailight coating. Spray it on, and unlit your it looks black. Once the lights are on, the light shines through and you can see them fine.
http://www.planetperformance.com/products/?searchtype=d&sortorder=&urlsubcategory=Chemicals+%26+Lubricants&productcategory=Specialty+Coatings&clearancespecials=1&sf4=Miscellaneous+Specialty+Coatings
This link shows a link to the product so you can see what it is. You should be able to find a single can somewhere for like $9 or so. Also, "blacking out" your tailights (with any product) may be considered illegal, even though the light shines through, due to the fact it "blacks out" the reflectors (they reflect light, not produce it, so the black out/tint would reduce the rflection of it), and I beleive you have to have at least 2 on the taillights be law. Anyways, if you want to "tinit" your tailights, that is the product you want. I've used it before once a long time ago for something, still have the can at home.

go to local hobby shop and ask for some transparent paint, a small can will cost 5 bucks. they come in blue, candy apple red and smoke color. to make them last spray on coats of clear coat.

I hate those LED Windsheild Washer squiters. I call em the "I wanna be like Vin Disiel and have everything LED" mod. What's equally as bad are those valve stem LED caps that light when the tires spin. Those to things, ahhhhh, horrible. I wish they'd dis-invent them, lol.

I tinted mine with night shades and like them a lot. Dark at day, bright at night.

There's a black Integra driving around here with blacked out tails, and those tail light covers with circles in them on top of the paint. Looks all black but when they hit the brakes only circles light up. Pretty original I guess..

I have a can of that stuff around my house. Long before they made black housed anything, I smoked out my corners, etc, using that stuff. It turned out alright. You didn't use too many coats, did you. How many coats did you use? I can sill see thru to the red, but it is darker. You found a good medium...not too dark, like black, just enough to smoke em to darken the tone.

Actually they are kinda black but in that pic the sun was right on them. On a darkish rainy day they almost look the same color as the rest of the car, and all you can see are the clear turn signals - which is the look I was going for. I put A LOT of extremely light coats on them so they wouldn't fog up. Took me about a day to do.. long time, but I didn't want to regret doing shoddy work.

No kidding, everywhere you go, it's alomost always shoddy work. I don't mean stuff like this, but anything, bodywork, paint work, body repair, engine repair, etc.....they always f*ck something up with shoddy work, either that or they manage to f someting up completely oppiste of what they were suppose to do...it gets annoying and leads to more DIY stuff, lol. Which brings us back to your point, the last thing you want when you are doing it yourself is shoddy work. Anyways, it looked good. My buddy wants me to do his with my can of niteshades at home, by he only wants it slightly smoked, not all blacked out...I figure maybe 2 light coats or so.

BUT
...as ive stated earlier: RSX's are discustingly sick. id trade my left nut for one in a heartbeat. as for the $320 / month payment, sure not that bad for that wicked of a ride, but both of us being under 25, how much is insurance going to be /month on that...at least $200. i was only half kidding when i said that they were high rollers anyway.

Well, after being brought back from the dead, this thread has taken an interesting turn the last few posts...lol. On a side note, I agree, nice looking RSX type-s. The smoked tails do look clean on the black. The dark wheels fit the profile of the car much better than the silver wheels do. I would run the dark wheels of those 2 choices if I was him. Also, I'd get the black JDM DC5 Integra Type-R (RSX) headlights. That would looks slick on a black car. Black headlights, black tails, black wheels, black paint, dark black window tint. That would look very nice. In the pic with the dark rims especially, that is a very clean car he has there. On another side note, I once didn't clear the some smoked corners when I did em. They looked good at first. But 2 years later, you could tell there was no clearcoat on them ever. So don't forget the clear!! Also, to whoever said that guy had a lot of rims cuz he had 2 sets. I have 2 sets of rims. Same rim, one set in 17", one in 18". I drive on the 17's. Never drove on the 18's. Don't think I ever will. Long story on why I ended up with 2 sets, but hey. It is amazing though, how much different the car looks on the exact same set of rims, the 18" set looked much better vs a 17" set. But not enough I would ever drive on em, lol. I have no need to drive on those 18's. Like I said, they just sit pretty. I suppose it wasn't a functional purchuse, but I got em at a song because they had been discountioned by racing hart.

I'm only 23, and I only pay (albeit not on an RSX, or a legitimate performance honda engine powered car) $600 a year for insurance - That's just the coverage that's required by the state of California. If you and your entire family's cars are all insured through Allstate, they'll give you great rates at least if you're in cali and you only get what's required by law. I'm sure if I got theft coverage for my Honda I'd be paying noticably more, but when we got quoted for that and vandalism and uninsured motorist and collision it still only came out to like a little over $1000 a year (that's with me and a spotless driving record, and fleet coverage because me, my parents and my brother all are insured through Allstate).

its different from person to person...i mean the circumstances. i have the same insurance as my parents, it saves me alot of money. im not even sure what it is but i know i get the whole line discount thing because they have it with the same company...i looked around for something cheaper but couldnt find anything that could touch the $1865/year that i currently pay. and im not questioning the company that were with...my mom is a state farm employee (soon to be agent) and we dont insure anything with state farm. just flat out too expensive. but to be brutally honest, no matter what company you or i go with its gonna be hella expensive...look at the facts: im 20 years old, i drive what my insurance company considers to be a 'sports car,' i have an $8000 loan on the car, and despite the fact that ive never had a ticket/been in an accident...im gonna pay alot. if i was smart id buy another civic...but im not smart.

Every time I get pulled over, I roll my window down, shut off my car, and put my hands behind my head, fingers interlaced. - works every time - try it.

The more I look into it, the more I've got a hell of a deal on my ride - because I only owe $2000 on my ride, and for $2000 more ($1500 for the engine and gearbox, and $500 for labor to remove my old one and install my new one) , I can get a complete B18C with roughly 30 K miles on it (the engine I want until I can afford to get a Dart block and head) dropped in provided that a friend of mine isn't full of $#!t, but he does have a couple of cars that he's put money into (an Eclipse and an Accord). I'll believe it when I see it.
Will it be a lot of work to drop a B18C into a Civic Si shell? They do come stock with a B16A.

Just so you know, you don't intend to actually take this out and race it, do you? The Dart motor is not NHRA approved...so even at their amatuer ranks, using that motor would be a no no.However, for "track racing" and autocrossing, it's a different story. This is only concerning the Dart if you are planning to drag it. If you are actually trying to compete with it in draggin, like I said, it's a no-no. If you are into that, I'd look into before I dropped 2 grand on a dart block. After buying the block, you'll need to add/provide the honda head (block comes with the holes for vtec), internals, vtec oil squitters, etc. Also, add $200 to the price of the block, as it will need to be honded for whatever pistions you would choose to put in.
Also, IMO, if you have an SI....forgot the swap or a dart block. Put that money into building and boosting the B16A. Your car comes with a nice B-series engine, tranny, and ecu. There is no need to go swap in a GSR. The gain you will see is not worth the extra $2000 you say you can get the swap done for is not worth gain you would seen in the swap. Also, $1500 for the parts for a GSR motor swap is cheap. I'd be very wary of it at that price. It just sounds too low, IMO. You already have a good B16A...just stick with that. You'd be better off putting it towards a turbo kit, or re-sleeving the deck with AEBS sleeves and starting to build the B16A up. Your money will go further if you went one of these routes instead. If you turbo it, for example...anf it costed 3 grand to do...for an extra $1000, the you could boost the B16A (8psi on stock internals) to a power output of 200WHP and 140 ft/lbs of torque, which can be achive on stock internals. That money is much more well spent, the power output is much higher. Your looking a a gian on 10hp and 15 ft/lbs of torque by swapping in a GSR for 2 grand, or a gain of 40HP and 39 ft/lbs of torque with a turbo in the above example for 3 grand. As you can see, you get much more bang for your buck with the latter route.

Yes, I'm aware of that, but the Dart motor and head is street legal which means I can install it in my car and won't have any problems smogging or registering it (only insuring it if the insurance company finds out about it - which I don't plan on letting happen).

My car was an Si - it's now an EX - it got stolen from the last non-car dealer owner and stripped of it's engine, interior, rims and front bumper - now it's got a different front bumper (still Honda OEM, but not the one that the Si's come with), a D16Y8, Honda Hubcap rims, and I'm not sure if it's still got Si interior - I've never really taken the time to look into any 2000 Si's to check out their interiors.
BTW, do you know where someone could get a Dart head for about $2000 - I sure as hell don't - if you do, give me a link or something, because I hear that brand new they can go for up to $10K. Also I wouldn't get a Dart block without a Dart Head - and I wouldn't drop it into my car without already having performance cams, cam gears and a turbo/supercharger installed with an upgraded fuel injection system.

Dart Blocks are also made to be extremely reliable when boosting or supercharging so they can take a lot of PSI before reliability is seriously compromised.

If you are serious about buying a DART block, call them up.
1-877-722-3327. Ask for John Keyes. He can answer your questions and help you out. He will also be able to explain everything you need to know. I've talked to him many times. I don't belive Dart makes heads...only blocks. He never mentioned a head to me, and I have never heard of one. For 10 grand, you are thinking of the crate engine using a dart block as a base. Mr. Gasket makes the crate engine called "The Beast" that is about 220hp, but it costs 10 grand. It doesn't use a dart head, as dart doesn't make honda heads. It's a perofrmance motor with a dart block as a base. I am well aware of what a dart block can do, but there are other options too. AEBS holds everal patents for re-sleeving, there sleeves can handle upwards of 55+ psi and are fit using an interfernce fit, they gaurentee no leaking...period. It would be $1255 to buy the sleeves and have them install them, and $200 for them to hone them for your pistons. It's gonna be about $200 for honing no matter what you buy, even dart's block. John Keyes will tell you that. Dart is in Michigan, so it's centeral time when you call, remember that. Anyways, it you are SERIOUS about getting dart, do yourself a favor and call them and ask to talk to John Keyes. If he isn't at his desk, leave a message, he DOES return calls. It's about $1900-2000 for the block. They make B18 stanard deck and tall deck, and B20 standard deck and tall deck. I beleive Crower is working on a stroker kit for the B20 tall deck that makes it a 2.3 liter stroked motor. John can tell you more about this.

He posted about DART, and I provided him with info that could help him. Beisdes, this thread was a dead thread for about a month before someone re-posted in it, so it's been long dead. After all, the last page or so has been off-topic for awhile, though this tends to happen in re-born dead threads. If he wants to start to talk about Dart in depth though, a new thread is a good idea. Just provide the link so we'd be able to find it.

Dart makes heads, but only for B series' I'd go with the B20 Dart block - no replacement for displacement. In fact, that's all that they make last time I checked.

first off, thank you for getting the thread back on topic. second off, what color is your car? tinting your tails would make everything black so the red AND orange would now be black. when you use your brakes or blinkers, the color WILL show through. and no, it would not look dumb

gnushit, hey...I just gave a quick answer to his question and a phone number and contact he could use to researcg more. I figured it better than to constantly clutter up the thread. And yes, I agree, and I'll say it again, a thread relevant to the topic is a better idea. Ispankyourmom, if you would like to discuss the topic more, start a thread on dart blocks, and send me a link to the thread. Besides, you'll get more responses in a new thread...
...Now back on topic...Kinked210, as gnushit stated, the red and orange only shine though when the light is lit. It the daytime, etc...it will look smoked out. The light only shines though when they are on, you turn or brake, etc. It won't look bad, it looks pretty good. Or, you could get red transparent Tailight paint and paint the orange part red. Your whole tailight area (scans the white reverse light area, mask that off), would light up red when you turned. That would look good too.

VHT Nightshades is a transparent tailight paint designed to "smoke out" the tailights like you've seen in the pics in the thread. It's a pretty commen one to use. Also, you might consider spraying a light clear coat over it when you are done, to help gloss it up and add a protective layer over it.

Yea, I didn't do that to the first pair I ever did. It looked alright at first, but after a while...you could definatly tell. Adding a few coats of clear definately helps. It helps protect it from dulling over time, and the shine and gloss really looks better than the flat look it gives normally. It also helps prevent scratchs a bit, as the clear it a bit tougher, at least I found it to be. And as I said, I really like the gloss and shine of the clear. Clear will also help keep it looking nice in the long run.
