A/C not working

hmm the heater is working but not the cold airconditioner
a friend of mine said some valve is letting the freon out so thats y it is not freezing :S
aproximately how much it cost to repair it ? (in US dollars)
and if its not the valve , wot else could be the problem ??
o the cars is a 2001 Jetta

I am having the same problem. My AC quit about 2 months ago. Its fall now and I'm not to worried. My A/C was cold as hell(29 Degrees). Now the way to get cold air is to turn the A/C on and off several times. If you come up with anything plaese let me know and I will do the same if I find anything.
