Engine problems

In my 97 540i the engine has very low revs and sometimes stalls out when I first start it up in cold weather. Acceleration during this time is also a problem. When I hit the gas the car doesnt respond right away. Once the car warms up I dont have any of these problems. Anyone know whats happening?
