After unplugging the battery the stereo in my 96 Jetta doesn't work. I heard I need to have some activation code for it. I don't have the owners' manual. What should I do?

Hey- I'm having the same problem you are. I do know that you have to obtain an activation code to reset the radio, so you'll have to call the dealer to get the code. They'll need your VIN. Once you get the code, supposedly you enter it somehow & it resets the radio- but that's what I'm having problems with. Let me know if you get anywhere on it & I'll do the same for you.

I just went to www.vwvortex.com and saw these steps to fix the problem. Haven't tried it yet, but here it is:
Do these steps.
1. Call dealer.
2. Give dealer vin.
3. Dealer gives you code.
4. Press Mode + scan together for 5 seconds.
5. Four lines come up " - - - - "
6. Input code in lines
example code " 4561 "
press "1" four times
press "2" five times
press "3" six times
press "4" once.
Press mode & scan again for 5 seconds.
This will work the radio, gj!

You have to have the vin # of the car and the number off the stereo. Then you call the dealer and they can give you the code.

You can also bring it to the dealer and they will do it for free. I had the same problem with my 95' jetta when I bought it. It will take them about five minutes. I also heard that you can go to auto zone and they can get it for you. Good luck
