Never entered an SPL competition, I don't have the right installation to be real competitive in them. From what I've heard from other people with the same sub in the same box, I should be hitting low 140's if I'm lucky.

I've been thinking of going to one of the audio stores around here and getting it metered, but I haven't yet

buy a Db meter, they are cheap

chrismerkle

how much are the Db meters?

Haibane
11-15-2003, 06:37 PM
I'd say anywhere from 10 dollars and up. You can get them at radioshack etc...

chrismerkle
11-15-2003, 07:42 PM
*heading to radio shack* thanks haibane.

do you have a loud system haibane?

Haibane
11-15-2003, 08:49 PM
Not at the moment. I am buying a ed15a.22 and putting it in a ported box and going to push around 1000 watts to it. That will be loud, but I am going for SQ. I had 2 15" audiobahns in a sealed box doing 600 watts each.

those radioshacks meters are good for up to 130db or so. after that, it gets rediculously inaccurate. typical meters (like AC, termpro, etc) will cost well beyond $500. my friend, RangerMan, on caraudio.com spent about $500 for his meter. its like the linearx, but with about .5db in variation.

loudest i ever got was 151.x with a single 15" RE SE d4 powered by 2 strapped DEI 1100d (2400x1@2ohm).that was on the termpro mic. tougher than the AC mics.

Who wants to go put 2400 watts into a 15?

chrismerkle
11-17-2003, 06:10 PM
151.x dB Gsteg? Jeez. Isnt the human threshold of pain like 160dB or so? i take it you dont play it that loud while driving to work, etc. :))

GSteg

EDIT

GSteg
11-17-2003, 06:38 PM
yup. 151.x db. can't remember the specific decibel, but it is in the 151's. the thresold of pain is 120db. 160 would deafen u in matter of seconds, especially at higher frequencies. now 140db of ~3000hz would kill your ears instantly. lol

chrismerkle
11-19-2003, 11:39 AM
so if it goes that loud... how do you test without killing your own ears?

chicago_guy
11-19-2003, 03:51 PM
you stand outside of the car...its not that hard to figure out :grinno:

and this is why you buy a bunch of remotes to turn off people's systems as you drive, lol. Never try that, it is stupid

 I'm gonna try that. That'd be halarious to have someone try to outbump you and just turn their head unit off when they aren't lookin'

Haibane
11-21-2003, 04:25 PM
any remote for that headunit that is made by the same company, if that is what you mean, it generally works that way on some

chrismerkle

lol say what u want there warrantied for 2 years and im good friends with the guy that sold them to me ive known him for ever so we'll see how much stuff i can wreck in 2 years cuz its all warrantied. i know for a fact i can hit at least 143 db some guy with a 2000 blazer hit 143 with lower level ma audio stuff than i have, his amp was only 3600 watts mines 4400rms. My subs will be in 4 cubic feet and tuned to 38 Hz. shooting for 150 155 db. dont know if i can hit that yet building the box this weekend.

sr20de4evr
06-14-2004, 01:10 AM
143?
you can hit 143 with a single 12 on 1000rms....shit my sub is a SQ sub and it can hit 140's on 1000rms in a daily driver box tuned in the 20's, raise the tuning to 45-50hz and you could easily get 143. You get a 15 or a true SPL sub on enough power and you're WELL past it

IH8RICE
06-14-2004, 01:47 PM
i agree so why does every one think im nuts when im shooting for 150 155 dB ive got 2 extra batteries ho alternator 180 amps and 4400 rms thats 2200 to each sub mono yea yea put the brand im running aside Ma Audio, may not be truly running that much but its still a crap load of mono power, my box is 4 cubic feet for each sub tuned to the recommended 38 Hz. :evillol:

I got robbed..my first run 136.sumthin'..second 139.7..the highest was 141.1 (a dude with 3 RF 10's in an Explorer)..third time I pull up, hit 141.8. Then some German dude pulls up, I think he registered late and hits a 143 in a sponsored corporate car and everyone tells me (including the people running the DB Drag) that he doesn't count..I think I'm going to get a trophy but when they put away all the mics they say that b/c he is a customer also that he gets to count and I can't redeem myself and try to beat 143...guess I'll just have to live and learn and prep my car for next time.

JC80
06-19-2004, 10:31 AM
the mics were pretty rough in this comp for some reason..the dude had 2 Hollywood sumthin's and a 2000w rms amp..lets just say his system probably cost more than his ride. I think they were the new mics or something b/c they were all hooked up to laptops and not the little digital boxes like I had seen before.

Anyone know how much of a difference the new mics make on reading the SPL than the old ones?

PaulD
06-19-2004, 02:37 PM
doesn't matter what setup the guy has ..... because it's suppose to be all calibrated to be accurate when working together. But even if it's off, everyone is still being judged equally by the same system that reading too high or too low.

Haibane
06-19-2004, 04:13 PM
haha, I bet I could hit louder than you with a single 15 ported with about 1600 watts

JC80
06-20-2004, 09:37 AM
Bet all you want..or how bout I just give you my mailing address and you can save time and just send the money to put towards my new system.
My car is about to have a complete overhaul of the audio system getting rid of the audiobahns (which I must say held up pretty good under pressure which surprised me but disappointed me with the overall score) and going with probably 2-4 12" MKIIs and getting 2 more 1200w amps (4 total), getting rid of the 40 section on my 60 40 split rear seat and running the amps one on top of the other in its place, reversing two of the subs so the magnets sit overhead above the rear seat and when I lay the rear seat down, two cones are facing towards the passenger and driver..should take about 4-5 months for everything.

so I'm a sore loser who wants retaliation.

PaulD: I know what your talking about but I was just saying that for as much as everyones systems were hitting..just seemed like all the scores shoulda been higher.

Haibane
06-20-2004, 02:57 PM
brahma MKIIs?

What amps are you using? if they are crappy amps... why not invest in 2 good ones... Who is doing your install? What size wires are you using? what inline fuses? What are you powering it off of? These are some things you need to look into to get the extra sound you want... Not just oh I think I will throw more subs in there that will be louder... It will be louder. You will be in a different group. You will get owned by people in that group just adding more subs. Just a few helpful hints.

you dont play at 3000hz, you play at 30-70hz

Haibane: amps: I'm using 2 (thinking about 2 more) JBL 1200.1s, best amps I've seen for the budget, and 2 JBL 180.2s for the fronts and rears(each speaker getting 90w rms @ 4ohms).
Installation: Me
Wires: Stinger 1/0 gauge from the battery to 300amp ANL Fuse Block carried on to a Pltnm T-block to a 3 Farad Audiobahn Capacitor, carrying on to another T-block splitting 1 1/0 gauge to 2 1/0 gauge going into a Stinger Digital Maxi-fused (60 amp per dist.)Distribution block splitting it up into 4 4gauge each going to a JBL amp. (have everything just need to put it in.)
Powering: In the process of getting a Optima yellow top and a higher output altenator.
...the only problem is trying to find a way to put all of this in a Focus ZX3.
