Questions

Hey guys whats goin on? Last week i just bought a 1984 camaro z-28, im 17 and its my first car. I Love it. I have a few questions about it though. Does anyone know how much horsepower and torque it has stock? The previous owner put flowmasters on it, but im not sure how much they did to increase the HP. I also want to add some stuff to it to make it faster but i dont know what i should do, considering it's an older car im not sure what i can and can't put on it. The only thing i could think of was putting in a "454 H.O. crate engine" from GM, but im not sure if it could fit or if it would be worth it. If you have any suggestions i would love to know. Keep in mind i want this car to last me a while, so if there are things i could do to the engine or transmisson to keep it running and in good shape I would love to know, thanks :)

Just rembember the more horse power you make the more you break. If it needs to be your daily driver I would just consider leaving it close to stock. 1984 engine is porbably just a little it on the tired side.

nice ride for a 17 year old, didnt get mine till i was 18 ;) as far as stock hp, the Z should have around 220? or 200? something like that, its not a whole lot, and flowmasters, im assuming its just cat backs, will add around 10, maybe 15. as far as the 454, it will fit, there are kits to do it, but its not really worth it, especially if you have T-Tops, the big block will spin your car in half. also, i dont know where you live, but if you have to pass emissions, the 454 will NEVER work. ever, no matter what. your best bet is to build a hot small block, and just bolt it in. much easyer, and a much better idea for your first car. as far as mods to the stock motor without ripping into it, go with the standard fair. a set of edelbrock emissions legal headers, a random tech flow through catalytic converter, and the flowmaster sytem would be good on the exhaust side. and a K&N air filter and cold air box on the top end would be good. is it TPI or TBI or *gasp* carburated??? as far as the internals of the engine, new pistons, (stock ones are horrrrible for combustion efficincy) new heads, such as vortecs, i know they are talked about all over, and everyone loves them, but there is a reason. they flow like stink and are cheap. check ebay, see if they are in your price range. youll have to buy a new intake for the heads. make sure it has the vortec bolt pattern. um, aside from that, that year is old enough that it should handle most mods. but it is computer controlled i thinkso you cant just drop in a drag motor and expect it to work. so stick with something on the high side of mild, untill you understand how the computer works, and are comferateable dealing with it.
